Aww look at the people saying "Pass" or "He's not what the team needs" like they have an actual say in the matter
What do they need ? A stretch 4 would be nice but it's gonna be Bonner...
The disappointing part to me was the Mills signing... If you do the Mills signing then you have to get another guard there's no way around it...
Aww look at the people saying "Pass" or "He's not what the team needs" like they have an actual say in the matter
...you do realize that goes both ways right?
"Aww look at the people saying 'Bazemore would be a good fit'...like they have an actual say in the matter"
well, if the spurs are meeting with him, it says they're interested... so those saying "not interested, pass" (including myself) are the ones out of the loop
but it's just people expressing opinions.... that's the purpose of sports forums. doesn't mean we actually believe our comments will sway their decisions
I`ll give you a hint: 20>15
Exactly...it just seems to dumb to call out people for giving their opinions on an internet forum. Are we not on here to talk about the Spurs?![]()
Didn't say it wouldn't cut the same way had another person said he was a good fit, but saying "Pass" or "he's not what the team needs" ignores the rhyme or reason behind the Spurs' interest. Not even a rumor as confirmed but a report on an actual "face-to-face meeting". Has anyone even identified the team's needs as of late? Afaik, Bazemore can play at least three spots, and if Cotton doesn't stick, he may fill in for Mills while the latter recovers. Besides, no one has said he'd be a good fit, and if he were a bad fit, no viable reason why can be seen above. Guy can defend, guy can shoot.
I already said I wouldn't mind getting Bazemore as long as the price is right. I just think it's a bit childish to to say things like "Aww look at people acting like they have a say in the matter". As far as I can tell, no one here has acted like they have a say in what the Spurs do. People are just giving their opinions because...well, we're on a Spurs forum and that's typically what you do on sports forums.
Seems dumb to post an emotionally-fueled opinion with cherry-picked evidence, or worse, no reasoning behind it. Opinion different from pointless blabber.
They need a young guard on a long-term cheap deal. One with upside but to whom the team is not strongly committed financially. Cotton and Denmon or some other summer-league guard.
The Spurs wanted Granger, to the point they supposedly told him he'd be the next Robert Horry. Look how that turned out. We're allowed to criticize or support the FO's decisions however we want. Sometimes we're right, and sometimes we're wrong.
I don't see how Granger affects the discussion. Sorry if I didn't get my point across but I wanted to hear more of why one would simply dismiss one of the FO's moves without any logic or reasoning behind it. I savor some if the discussion here and it wouldn't hurt to up the ante a bit, so to speak. Merely dismissing one of the FO's moves without any justification just reeks of personal conviction. I could say this is just an Internet forum after all, but I've seen posts which I actually learned from, despite discussions being tainted sometimes by egos and personal jabs.
Supposedly, Atlanta is offering $6M/2. Do you really think that deal makes sense for the Spurs to offer for a fourth-string PG?
Again, I fail to see how this affects the discussion, seeing that (a) Bazemore has not accepted any offers; (b) the Spurs have yet to tender an offer. I'll take your bait and say no, the deal fails to make sense, but at least there's a good reason to dismiss the notion of him coming to San Antonio: he's out of the perceived price range of a player his caliber. I've seen players take less to be part of the squad though, e.g. Belinelli, so I would stick to the facts until the dust settles.
Bringing up Belinelli is interesting as he single-handedly requires to have a plus defender at the 1 given how ty he is on that end of the floor... Which is why Bazemore would be a decent choice...
Has the feel of him being Greens replacement when he bolts for the big dollars in free agency if the spurs can't match. If bazemore emerges as a shooter any where near greens level I see him being a swell replacement for cheaper. Greens the better player at the moment though.
Baynes only has a QO on the table, which can be withdrawn at any time. Bonner is yet unsigned. Cotton will be cut in camp and sent to Austin on a d-league contract.
I wouldn't be in favor of the signing as he isn't really what the Spurs need. He may have the physical ability to play positions 1-3, but he has a higher turnover percentage than assist percentage, and per 36 minutes CoJo has similar/better stats in all major categories except points (Cojo also has a much better ORtg and DRtg). Between Manu, Green, and Marco they don't need a another 2 guard unless the FO plans to move one of them to the backup 3 spot full time. And at 6'4-6'5, Bazemore is a bit undersized to be the backup 3 full-time. Other worrisome traits include his 60% ft percentage that hasn't improved since entering the NBA. As far as the Spurs system, he isn't a great 3pt shooter, 33% career, and has a relatively low FG% at 41% (although it should be noted both did improve from his first to second year).
There is some potential there, but given the limited roster space, the fact he doesn't really address a current need, and the presence of other offers on the table that are likely to drive up his salary, I think the Spurs should pass on him. That being said, if he signed something cheap this year and spent most of the year with the Toros, I could see him moving into the lineup post-Manu
I had no idea that he was a good defender (I don't follow college basketball), so thanks for pointing that out. That changes my interest level quite a lot, as I do like athletic defensive players. If his offense is somewhat decent and can fit in with the Spurs, then I am very interested. I still probably wouldn't want to give him more than the BAE though.
What positions can he guard on the NBA level? I assume 1s and 2s, but can he also check 3s?
Two or three years ago, we would have gotten him for the minimum. Now, with our former guys running things in ATL, they want the same players we want, and can spend for them.
How many years has he been in the league? Would this be his third season?
Baynes and Bonner have yet to be signed. Cotton is unguaranteed.
Yes, it is very crowded, 12 players have guaranteed contracts. Anderson will likely be signed.
Thanks.
I'm interested to know what positions Bazemore can check. Is it 1-3 or only 1s and 2s? Either way, it'd be good to have someone that can check 1s at an elite level. Danny Green is pretty much the only guy on the team that can play very good defense against the best PGs in the NBA. The rest of the team really struggles defending a lot of the most explosive PGs in the NBA.
Edit : forgot to mention Cory. His defense isn't too bad at the PG spot. Would Bazemore be a better overall defender than Joseph?
Always slips my mind that this option exists for over the cap teams - doesn't affect ability to use MLE or BAE and only things to bear in mind are (1) need to stay under the tax, which won't be a problem and (2) it's a small hit to Holt's wallet, plus he may have to take something back / dump a draft pick (read: cheaper contract than a vet) just to offload Ayers.
Also, there's a chance Cotton doesn't even make the roster. I doubt they'd have him AND Bazemore. Still holding out hope that they're willing to spend at least some of the MLE and that Bazemore is a contingency plan if one of the guys they've earmarked doesn't pan out.
