Forever haunted by Uruguay in 1950, forever haunted by Germany in 2014
the game is strong with this one
I've rewatched the game, and 'tho Germany's performance was very strong, the Brazilian defense/midfield made schoolboy-level errors. Specially Marcelo, David Luiz and Fernandinho.
1) Marcelo. Worst of the bunch. Went to the German half, but carrying the ball instead of attacking the space. Lost possesion and tracked back really slowly. Conceeded the corner for the first goal and the throw-in for the second that way. In the second goal he also followed Muller's diagonal run into his own box instead of watching the rest of the defensive line, which was going forward to play offside. He got late to challenge the cross in the 3rd goal because he was out of position. And in the 4th he got caught and played the entire German team onside.
2) David Luiz. He got stuck with Klose in Germany's first goal when he was man-marking Muller in that corner kick. He worried more about Klose setting a pick on him rather than following Muller, and his bad positioning let Muller score. You always have to be between the player you should mark and the goal, if he beats you on the air, then good on him, the rest is nonsense. The rest of the Brazilian defense didn't help, because it looked like they didn't know if they were marking zone or man-to-man. He went out awfully in the German 4th goal to challenge while the rest of the line was going backwards.
3) Fernandinho. Didn't win a single ball back in those minutes and he was out of position, going late to intercept passes and leaving the Germans a huge space to attack the Brazilians central backs ball-in-feet. When he realized this, he moved right along the two central backs and left Oscar alone, leaving even more space to the German attack.
The rest didn't help: Hulk for all his suposed defensive work rate didn't track back once, same for Bernard. Dante was disoriented and late to most coverings. Luiz Gustavo was MIA and Maicon had the dubious honour of being the least horrible out of that back 4. Overall, appalling defense for this stage and for a team which its suposed strength lie in that aspect. They had both individual and collective blunders.
Too much
