I understand. After the Gasol debacle though I don't know how anyone can take him seriously.

Pop signed a 5-year extension. I seriously don't think he is going to ditch on his last 4 years. I could see him dropping out a season or two early, but Pop is too in tune with the front office and organization to sign a deal for five years and then bail on it.
Definitely. To me, this is a mutually beneficial situation for all parties involved, that doesn't necessarily indicate any future move by any party involved. Messina gets to come over to the NBA, network, meet decision makers, and put himself directly in the pool of potential NBA head coaches, all while working in the best organization in professional sports. And the Spurs get a very qualified, talented, and accomplished basketball mind on their staff. An exceptional situation for both parties.

Personally, I think Pop coaches until the wheels fall off. Outside of some weird, unfortunate, and long term family situation arising, I think what will determine Pop's retirement is his own personal health, and ancillary considerations like what other coaches are around will have little or anything to do with it. Have we already forgotten how much confident speculation there was that Pop was grooming Bud specifically to be his replacement? Most likely, Messina will be on the bench for a season or two before he's hired somewhere else as a head coach. And grows, Pop's coaching network.

Marks moved down to the bench to help Gregg Popovich this season, but plan was always to return upstairs. Spurs have big plans for Marks.

I don't think Messina is Pop's heir apparent. That's probably Udoka. Messina will probably be hired away in a year or two. No one's going to Leno Pop.

Is Udoka a good coach? BTW, I wonder what "big plans" mean for Sean Marks.

Not nearly as good as Messina, which is why he'll still be around in five years. Supposedly, he has a lot of potential, though. He's pretty much the wings coach on the team, and you can't argue with those results.

Not to hijack the thread but per the internet Pop makes less than Rivers and Van Gundy.

I mean among those 3 coaches they share 6 championships but I'm surprised Pop hasn't received a bump in salary.

I doubt he cares about that, as long as it's a fair amount he loves what he does.
