I was thinking the same thing. Imagine this FO group managing things around DRob all those years. We would have witnessed some epic Spurs/Bulls Finals.
On when the team realized it could win the NBA le during the regular season:
We were so looking for perfection throughout the season it is difficult to answer. But still, towards the end of the regular season, we were back in front of Oklahoma City at the top of the Western Conference. We seemed to play more moderately, with a spate of injuries. We wondered how we could be first in these conditions. This is where we said: “Maybe the other teams are not so strong” (smiles).

Would'nt it be ironic if the Spurs repeat this next year when the other 4 championships were with a younger returning team and they all failed to repeat.
the Big 3 is indeed quite older but isn't the rest of the roster much younger (Leonard, Mills, Green, Splitter, Bellineli, Joseph, Ayers, Baynes)?
4/28? that's new
So if it's a declining deal as reported that might mean something like $7,875,000; $7,284,375; $6,693,750; $6,103,125, with a partial guarantee the third year and an unguaranteed fourth year. (My numbers total $27,956,250 with 7.5% decreases.)
yep. and based on that, after the 2nd season the remaining guaranteed pay is only 2.34 mil, which if the spurs chose, could free up about 4.3 mil in cap space. the non-guaranteed pay would also make him a potential trade asset for a team looking to shed quick salary.
now of course i wouldn't want it to come to that, but its just options to be looking at with a 30+ player signing a multiyear deal.
still, this is the first im hearing of it being a 4 year deal, so i'll wait until some details come out
We know Portland, my guess is Miami and probably Houston as the others. Miami because they got the front row show for Diaw's Finals, and Houston because they're punks with money and hate our front office.
I think, looking at the numbers, it's much more likely to be $7m per year with no increase/decrease, which would make the 3rd year 50% guaranteed. The numbers just fit a lot nicer that way.
since the spurs weren't looking to preserve cap room this season, it would actually make more sense to frontload it. from a cap room perspective, the numbers fit a lot nicer that way
Actually in a 4 year deal, from a cap room perspective for next season it makes sense to backload it. Considering we'll be bringing back Kawhi next year (likely at the max) we won't have cap space after the summer of 2015 so it makes little sense to try to save space for that year.
For the record, Pau Gasol's contract is 3 yrs / $22M. Given that the Spurs signed Diaw for essentially the same price, R.C. not only overpaid Diaw, he chose him over Gasol.
no. the spurs signed Diaw with Bird rights. they didn't have enough cap room to sign Gasol, even for the same amount as we gave Diaw.
Theoretically they could have opened enough cap space for Gasol by renouncing Diaw and Mills.
Wonder what other part of the initial report was wrong. If they are unguaranteed years at the end, it may make sense for the spurs to have increases as opposed to decreases over time.
It wouldn't make sense for Boris to sign that, though. He sees them sign Tiago to a decreasing deal, with all his big money up front, and the Spurs would offer him a deal with the largest year(s) unguaranteed?
I agree, just looking at it from the team's perspective. Then again, the team may like the decreasing figures (along with Tiagos deal) as it will help offset Leonard's increasing salary on his next deal.
Once we renew Parker and extend Leonard, I doubt we'll have any cap space for years.
Cap is supposed to jump to $67 million next year and projected to sky rocket to $80 million in two years. The Spurs could be swimming in cap space in two seasons.
Where has that projection come from for two years time? I know the TV deals are going to be renegotiated but that will almost certainly come along with another lockout followed by a new CBA, I don't see how there can be any serious projections from 2017 onwards when there are so many variables.
With the cap jumping next summer and Kawhis cap hold only $7m, we have a chance to add a max player (assuming Timmy and Manu retire). I think that's that needs to be the priority.
Is this a typo>
Even if Leonard gets maxed out, the Spurs stand to have a ton of cap space in 2017. The only player currently under contract is Diaw.
Which would have been a bad move. Plus it confirms that we didn't choose diaw over pau, but rather chose Diaw+ mills over pau. Quite different
