5 Ways The U.S. Can Respond To Russia Invading Ukraine — Without Going To War

    1. Suspend Russia’s membership in the G-8

Russia joining the Group of 7 in 1998, despite being the weakest of the group’s economies at the time, was considered a huge boost to the prestige a country still recovering after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Russia is also due to host the next meeting of the G-8 in Sochi, the site of the recently concluded Olympics, this June. Rather than the U.S. simply boycotting the meeting, the Obama administration could lead the charge along with the other members to suspend Russia’s membership in the group.

    2. Place travel bans on Putin and his family

While multilateral travel bans are unlikely to come from the United Nations, thanks to Russia’s veto power on the Security Council, the U.S. can still enact unilateral travel sanctions on Putin and his family. While Putin would still be able to travel to New York for United Nations meetings, preventing the Russian president from entering U.S. territory, and marshaling European countries and other allies to do the same, would send a strong message to Putin that he is persona non-grata in the international community.

    3. Enact trade sanctions against Russia

As recently as December, Russia was looking to boost trade with the United States — which already stands at about $40 billion annually — though remaining just shy of a free trade deal. Both Russia and the United States are members of the World Trade Organization, which brings with it certain obligations when it comes to tarrifs and trade embargoes. But insofar as those obligations allow, the U.S. can use reduced trade with Russia to show its displeasure.

    4. Suspension of NATO cooperation and participation

After the collapse of the USSR, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization welcomed in several of the formerly Soviet states, including Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia. Russia has long seen this expansion as a threat, which is part of the reason Ukraine is not a NATO member state. To help assauge those fears, NATO began outreach to Russia in the late 1990s, including setting up a NATO-Russia Council to frequently meet and exchange concerns. In light of Putin’s move on Ukraine, the U.S. should move to have those meetings suspended and cooperation between NATO and Russia halted.

    5. Accelerate missile defense programs in Russia’s near abroad

One of Russia’s top concerns when it comes to U.S. policy has been the instillation of a missile defense network in Eastern Europe. Washington has always insisted the network in Poland and the Czech Republic are to protect Europe from the threat of missiles from Iran, though Moscow has long been skeptical. The Obama administration has dialed back some of the program in the hopes of reducing Russian fears and enabling cooperation in other areas, for example on Iran’s nuclear program. Many of those choices could now be reversed with consideration to other American security interests.

One interesting outcome might be to solidify the NW part of the country and force Kiev to get its house in order early and firmly. Political opponents are more likely to work together with an overriding common cause.

It might ultimately lead to a NATO affiliated portion, or not. Twill be interesting to see how far the Russians go. They must realize that they might lose significant control over vast territory in the West.

Russian Troops Take Possession of Crimea without Firing a Shot
    Source: ASSOCIATED PRESS

SIMFEROPOL, Ukraine (AP) — Russian troops took over the strategic Crimean peninsula Saturday without firing a shot. The newly installed government in Kiev was powerless to react, and despite calls by U.S. President Barack Obama for Russia to pull back its forces, Western governments had few options to counter Russia's military moves.

Russian President Vladimir Putin sought and quickly got his parliament's approval to use its military to protect Russia's interests across Ukraine. But while sometimes-violent pro-Russian protests broke out Saturday in a number of Russian-speaking regions of eastern Ukraine, Moscow's immediate focus appeared to be Crimea.

Tensions increased when Ukraine's acting president, Oleksandr Turchynov, made a late night announcement that he had ordered the country's armed forces to be at full readiness because of the threat of "potential aggression."

Speaking live on Ukrainian TV, Turchynov said he had also ordered stepped up security at nuclear power plants, airports and other strategic infrastructure.

Ukraine will extend a cease-fire in its fight against separatist rebels today after President Petro Poroshenko signed a European Union accord rejected by his predecessor that sent the country spiraling into crisis.

Moscow today threatened natural gas deliveries to any European country that contrives a bypass to supply Ukraine with Russian fuel. The warning is a salvo against what it called a “half-fraudulent scheme” to confound Moscow’s 11-day-old cutoff of gas to Ukraine.

More significant is Putins inaction on the ground.
He let Ukraine get settled and gain military momentum.
Sanctions might have had an impact and or he realized the big mess he started.

    Showdown awaits in Donetsk.

Ok, I believe we should stay out of most wars. But I hate Russians and 23 Americans were on that plane. Time to show force in the Ukraine.

    19:00:
A tweet (in Russian) from a key Twitter account used by pro-Russian separatists, in which they claim to have captured a Buk surface-to-air missile system, has now been deleted, BBC Monitoring observes. Ukrainians say the Malaysian plane could have been downed with a Buk, but pro-Russian rebels have now denied they have it.

lol and how the do you propose they do that? navy won't help you against the russians who have superior ground forces and deep battle doctrine which is superior to our tactics. the russians are the reason we haven't attacked iran or syria. iraq was supposed to be a springboard into iran..we sent in georgia to destroy the underground tunnel linking russia to iran (to supply troops and reinforcements) but when the russian response was quicker than suspected back in 2008 the americans were stunned. they quickly packed up and left iraq since attack was no longer a possibility..they do NOT want a piece of russia.

    How will the UN respond?
    Look for the terrorists maybe?

It is extremely unusual to target an aircraft at 32,000 ft... Another plane would have been on radar... Russia and Ukraine both would know it wasn't an attacking plane at that al ude.

    Well, the AN-26 doesn't look anything like a 777...

The AN-26 was shot down 3 days ago, it was flying at 6,500 ft.

    It does on radar.

Especially if you don't really know what you are doing.
They could also be shooting at AN-26 and missed it. Again - highly likely if you are faking it.
