Where has that projection come from for two years time? I know the TV deals are going to be renegotiated but that will almost certainly come along with another lockout followed by a new CBA, I don't see how there can be any serious projections from 2017 onwards when there are so many variables.

With the cap jumping next summer and Kawhis cap hold only $7m, we have a chance to add a max player (assuming Timmy and Manu retire). I think that's that needs to be the priority.

i know that a lockout is looming but unless the players get hammered in the new CBA it should probably be in that range for '16-'17.

If Parker re-ups for around 10-11 million per, Green for about $5 million, and the Spurs max out Kl (i think it would start out around $16. Those are the essentials that are UFA or RFAs after next season. Add in Anderson, Splitter, Diaw and Mills thats about $52 Million for 7 rotation players that would be a good start going forward in terms of flexibility.

Remember that Kawhis cap hold is only $7m in the summer of 2015, which (using your figures) would put us at $43m. If the cap indeed does jump again next year, that could give us $24m in cap room next summer to spend on a free agent (I'd love Marc Gasol personally) and could possibly even give us room to sign Timmy AND a free agent if Duncan wants to continue. Of course if we strike out, we could roll over a lot of that cap room to 2016, but as Kawhi will count $8m more towards the cap as he will in 2015 it may put top tier free agents out of our reach.

I think Anthony Davis is a fascinating case. Rather than taking an extension in 2016, he might gamble and wait for a much larger max the next year as an unrestricted free agent. That could heavily depend on how injury-free he stays going forward though.

no. the spurs signed Diaw with Bird rights. they didn't have enough cap room to sign Gasol, even for the same amount as we gave Diaw.
They would have if we had renounced the rights to Diaw and Mills.

Theoretically they could have opened enough cap space for Gasol by renouncing Diaw and Mills.
Which would have been a bad move. Plus it confirms that we didn't choose diaw over pau, but rather chose Diaw+ mills over pau. Quite different

That was never happening. I mean, it was as likely as RC going Morey, and salary dumping everyone to chase big fish this summer. Anything is hypothetically possible, but life is not lived in the hypothetical realm.

I'd rather have Diaw + Mills than Pau. Actually, I'd rather have Diaw than Pau.

4/28 with only 17.5 guaranteed would be a very team-friendly contract. Among the several benefits for the Spurs, they'd get contract-year Boris as early as Year 2 of the deal.

Not sure Gasol would leave Memphis because of his ties to Memphis and the extra money to stay with the Griz. I don't think the Spurs are going to let Kawhi become a RFA. If they go the route you mentioned, that would be essentially like what Houston attempted to do. Which is an interesting option. Either way in 2016 they should have nice room to retool whether Kawhi signs a max or becomes an RFA. If they go the max route, they could bring over LJC or Bertans and, if they choose, use their draft pick in 2015 to add cheap talent.

That couple give then $56 million in salary for 9 players and approximately $11 million in cap space if it jumps to about $67.3 million. They could use that on one or two players. Belinelli would have a $5.3 million cap hold along with Cojo's (2.5 million) which could get in the way, though.

    Posted in the Think Tank:

Sham just updated the Spurs salaries with Boris

    http://data.shamsports.com/content/p...ries/spurs.jsp

    7.5m / 7m / 6.5m / 7m

4y/28m, only 17.5m guaranteed. 3rd year only 3m guaranteed and last year fully unguaranteed.

Interesting the way they structured it.
That's a very team-friendly deal. The 4th year is essentially a super flexible trade exception.

It looks like 2017 is replacing 2015 as the new window for significant cap space. It wouldn't be surprising to see Tony get a two year extension, or three years with a partial guarantee in year 3.

So in reality, Patty got much less than initially reported (guaranteed) & so did Boris (see a pattern...)? What's odd about Boris is his initial report was for 3 years/22M, then his actual number came out with an extra year/more money, but then turned out (for all practical purposes) to be a 2yr/14.5M contract.

so year 3 is either paying him 6.5 to play or 3 to walk. that last year is basically a throw-away, not sure why it was included at all, tbh. i doubt the Spurs hang onto him during his age 35 season at 7 mil.

Why not? His game should age at least as well as Tim's has. It's not like he's a high flyer or a speed merchant. The things he does now, passing, shooting, posting up smalls and breaking down bigs, he can continue to do.

I can easily see the Duo Francais playing here until they are 37-38. Tony has said he wants to play 20 years, and Boris will probably just fulfill his "friend" role and stick around. He'll be a useful piece for years to come.

i cant imagine a 35 year old reserve's market value being 7 million at that point. they could easily have him on a more team-friendly deal at that point

Not a single dollar of that 7M is guaranteed. It doesn't get any more team-friendly than that.

and the only benefit of that is that they'd be able to cut him at no cost, and re-sign him at a lesser deal. if they keep him, the 7 mil is 7 mil

    lol @ Patty's deal:

    3 year/$10.999.999, with $333.333 in incentives.

    Loves that number 3!

Adding that 4th unguaranteed year comes with zero risk for the Spurs and brings great potential advantages. It is essentially a super flexible 7M trade exception.

Yeah, when you look closely, this is pretty much the contract that most of us thought he'd get - 2/15.
