Israel set up the Gaza Strip and allowed it to function on its own.
Once the mortars then rockets started coming down, they shut down the arms that were being brought in along with essential items. Hamas essentially dared Israel by sacrificing Palestinian well being. The international community criticized Israel for stopping the flow of building material like concrete. Israel knew it was going to make tunnels.
Now Israel is at a point that they will not stop until they have severely damaged the tunnel networks and missile launchers. This required people on the ground. Once this occurred, Israel knew its death toll would go up as would civilians. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon expressed "outrage and regret" at rockets which were placed inside a UN-run school in Gaza. BBC
Israel was willing to take the likely deaths to insure future security... for a while. Israel has accepted the fact that Hamas rules Gaza, and this means constant conflict. Their public is in that mode now. They want to live free of random rocket attacks and tunnels allowing kidnapping.
The middle ground shrinks when a war begins. See the beginning of planning right after 9/11. The revenge factor gets huge. This latest episode began with the 3 Israeli teenagers. People love revenge.
Israel is surrounded by neighbors who use the Palestinians as fodder. Sadly, Israel is right now happy to oblige. There are court cases in Israel made by Jewish peace groups trying to stop this in Israeli courts. Yes, it's a democracy. The doves in Israel get completely overshadowed when the rockets come, go figure...

Repeat process. This is how Hamas has decided how to deal with the situation when Gaza was given self control from within. This is how Israel will retaliate. The block aides would not be necessary if a Hamas did not bring in rockets, etc...
So is the media one sided on this or not? Some more objective reporting would be nice, but it Seems you can get both sides of the story if you want.
The biases are clear on both sides with respect to media coverage. You just have to be mildly intelligent to sift through the bull .

Punished for her act of dissent with the cancellation of all future appearances and the termination of her contract, Jebreal spoke to me about what prompted her to speak out and why MSNBC was presenting such a distorted view of the crisis.
“I couldn’t stay silent after seeing the amount of airtime given to Israeli politicians versus Palestinians,” Jebreal told me. “They say we are balanced but their idea of balance is 90 percent Israeli guests and 10 percent Palestinians. This kind of media is what leads to the failing policies that we see in Gaza.”
She continued, “We as journalists are there to afflict the comfortable and who is comfortable in this case? Who is really endangering both sides and harming American interests in the region? It’s those enforcing the status quo of the siege of Gaza and the occupation of the West Bank.”
Jebreal said that in her two years as an MSNBC contributor, she had protested the network’s slanted coverage repeatedly in private conversations with producers. “I told them we have a serious issue here,” she explained. “But everybody’s intimidated by this pressure and if it’s not direct then it becomes self-censorship.”
