I just signed on for another contract overseas (different company) and they use a 3rd party to perform a lengthy background check (previous employment, criminal history, reference check, etc). When they hit a snag and need clarification they email you and ask for more information. So I get an email today saying "so and so has not been responsive. Would you kindly make contact and encourage him to follow-up with us." So I text, call, and email my old boss and I get no response back. Keep in mind I (successfully) used him less than a year ago as a reference for my first contract gig. So I call up a friend of a friend and ask him if he changed his number. Her response: Wait...seriously, you didn't hear about Jack?

Nah, he apparently murdered a gunshop owner and is in prison for life. Needless to say I changed references in a heartbeat and all's well now---but still, kinda surreal. Looking through the news reports/footage now, still havent digested it all

ugh i'm sick of even thinking about the employment process. being in an extremely pretentious field and young and relatively inexperienced makes it even more challenging. i have no problems getting interviews with big prestigious companies (JPM's investment banking wing most recently) but stalls somewhere down the line. good luck going through all the motions imho.
