On paper it's a bit odd to have a rookie coach leading the team of the two times NBA champion Lebron James.

Nevertheless dude had a solid career in Israel and Russia, named multiple times coach of the year. Besides his coaching is obviously influenced by Europe with a game made of passes, cuts, finding the open guy... let's call that the San Antonio way of playing bb which is in line with Lebron willingness to play a selfless brand of bb.

I read some very positive articles by US media on him but I'm curious to know what ST posters think about D Blatt coaching king James or Coon James like Harlem like to call him nowadays ? Is that a risky move by Lebron or on the contrary the smart thing to do ?

Blatt is the best coach in Europe in coaching mediocre teams and getting them to the top as an underdog.. If he's the favorite, he's not THAT amazing tbh.

A coach from Europe that promotes ball movement, spacing and free basketball is an automatic upgrade over 2/3 of the league's coaches, tbh..

He's an asshole and a jew, but he has a system and can actually draw up plays. Agree with malik , that automatically makes him better than like 26other coaches in the league

This is also why it is so important for Cavs to get Love, Blatt needs this "famous" stretch four to create space.

The fact Lebron is losing weight is also a sign he wants to play SF and not play anymore the center guy which is understandable for his health and career longevity. The more I see this move the more I think Lebron is making a consistent and solid choice... playing bb having fun with ball movement, selfless bb; finding a roster that can bring him back at his natural position; preserving his health and career longetivity (Blatt is not known to play his starters heavy minutes, he actually uses the bench)

I'm in fact quite impatient and curious to see how this team and Lebron are gonna evolve next season

I would so much rather take my chances with Blatt than with scrub NBA coaches like Byronn Scott, Mark Jackson, Mike Woodson, Scotty Brooks, etc who just want to iso all the time. The clinic the Spurs put on with B+/A- level offensive talent playing Euroball/Classball was impressive. I wonder if Cleveland can duplicate it with A+ offensive talent like James and Love.

I agree though. I can't wait to see what the Cavs look like next year.

he's Jewish so he's savvy. and because he's Jewish he'll receive lots of support from the league and media. not a bad hire from Gilbert.

The majority of coaches that were former players in today's NBA played in the late 80s and 90s, where teams only ran ISO-ball and played slow-pace basketball, which is why you see teams like the Thunder, Rockets and Warriors get killed by their own coaching staff..Kidd is another example of a guy that only ran ISO plays last year, the Nets were top 4 in the league in ISO %..

There are coaches like Doc Rivers and Steve Kerr that have acknowledged the advanced and new direction of the league, though, to be fair to some of those 80s/90s players..

Your team will dominate the NBA once the appropriate bench players are recruited and the chemistry is developed. It may take 1 year though but, after that, OKC, Rockets, Mavs, Bulls, Clippers have no ability to match Cavs. You should be glad that the Cav owner made the right choices in hiring this coach and traded for Love.

Miami moved the ball pretty well in the LeBron era tbh...

But I'd much rather give Blatt a shot than your standard NBA retread coach as others have said.

I think him and Kerr are your late seasons candidates for CotY tbh

How does he address his team's defense? Great spacing through ball movement is nice but unless you also pay attention to the other side of the court, you're basically no better than Mike D'Antoni.

from what I've heard, Blatt is a more practical coach.. he's not as inventive and advocate of ball flow like other euro coaches.. but he must be already better than 80% of other nba coaches like mchale and brooks

His teams are not known to be _antoni kinda of defense. He is very pop esque, not a lot of gamble in the D end: focus on D rebound and transition D. If healthy Varejao and Lebron should give them a solid Defensive fundation. Blatt is also very different from _antoni on the O imo, He is not obsessed by pace and shooting the ball in 4-5 sec, his teams usually take the time to set their offense, he is not preaching a dynamit kinda offense but patience to find the open dude.

If Blatt can coach the Russian national team where gulag time awaits for non-performance and actually be somehow good at it, he can certainly coach a group of overpaid millionaire athletes from the United States.

Son, Russia is not equal to the USSR. In our prime we won gold in 72 and then even got one on the way out in 88 thanks to the aforementioned system. But Putin is no Brezhnev, Kruschev, nor Gorbachev, much less fearless Lenin or glorious Stalin tbh.

that would be the contrary, easier to coach players where gulag time awaits for non performance than a bunch of egomaniac overpaid players... r

Byron Scott is a superior coach to Blatt. Blatt won't even be half the coach Byron is. Can't wait to see this guy destroy the Great Satan's career. It should be fun to watch.
