Moscow may force European airlines to fly around Russia

    http://uk.reuters.com/article/2014/0...0G50CS20140805

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev threatened on Tuesday to retaliate for the grounding of a subsidiary of national airline Aeroflot because of EU sanctions, with one newspaper reporting that European flights to Asia over Siberia could be banned.

The business daily Vedomosti reported that Russia may restrict or ban European airlines from flying over Siberia on Asian routes, a move that would impose costs on European carriers by making flights take longer and require more fuel.

Vedomosti quoted one source as saying a ban could cost airlines like Lufthansa, British Airways and Air France 1 billion euros ($1.3 billion) over three months

US says Russia has 20K troops on the Ukrainian border. If they invade, no telling how bad West-Russia "cold war" will be.

And of course, the Repugs/Fox say, will say, it's all Obama's fault for not bombing the out of Russia, which is another reason the Repugs should NEVER again get control of Congress and WH ... EVER!

As an European, you get what you asked for. We gave in to Obama's demands and now Putin will make us pay.

Russia isn't going to do this. It would be financial suicide. If they start raising the stakes, they could actually piss enough people off to have some serious sanctions brought to bear against them.

They can't win. It's them vs. all of Europe and the US right now. That is not a tenable position for Moscow, especially with their financial system already struggling to cope with the current crisis.

Well, maybe the sanctions should be lifted off of Russia.

Look who started it. Putin's just playing poker the right way instead of folding.

yeah, Russian oligarchs, including VP, have $Bs stashed outside of Russia.

If the West started impounding those $Bs for Russia invading Ukraine (flight capital fleeing daily), I expect Russia would figure protecting the ethnic Russians in Ukraine wouldn't be worth the cost.

Putin was in a decent (not strong, but decent) position.

Then his miscreants shot down a civilian airline.

That completely brutalized his chances of remaining strong in this situation. His tough guy machismo (which, unsurprisingly, you have a hard on for) is such an obvious show of bluster and Europe is only going to go along with it so far.

at thinking Russia can go toe-to-toe with the rest of the EU economically. It would certainly hurt the EU, but it would completely devastate the Mother country.

    I disagree.

The new Russia isn't the same as the old CCCP.

They supply the EU with something like 1/3rd of their oil and gas. The EU needs to watch out over this, especially since no hard evidence is presented.

Conflicting evidence says it may not have been the pro-Russian group.

It's pretty damn stupid to make such a unfounded claim with certainty.

We'll see how long Russian people put up with losing all that food. Probably Putin is as responsive to his people as US govt is to Americans.

Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council spokesman Andrei Lysenko told Interfax Thursday that the Ukrainian army is not equipped with the SA-11, which raises questions about where the separatists may have gotten one (if that's in fact what they used).

For their part, rebel leaders deny having any Buk missile launchers. But other militia members told
Russian state media last month that they had "taken control" of a number of SA-11s.

Update: U.S. officials have confirmed that MH17 was downed by a surface-to-air missile, according to The Post's own Ernesto Londoño.

So Russia responds to claims it had a role in shooting down a commercial airliner by threatening to shoot down commercial airliners.

    Smart move.

russia is still a s of what it used to be. and the fact that all modern western weaponry was initially designed to take out russian armor, it'd be a laughable war. only thing scary is nukes.

The malay flight has not been proven to be shot down by a missile. Quite the contrary more evidence is coming up that the fusselage has bullet holes in it. As from artillery s s.

i agree so far the war cries over this resemble Iraq WMDs to the T

    Who's crying for war?
US Navy destroyer, the USS Truxtun, has crossed Turkey's Bosphorus and entered the Black Sea. With the Crimea Peninsula getting ready to hold a referendum on independence from Ukraine in a week, the US is ramping up its military presence in the region.

“Given its continued provocations in Ukraine, today I have approved a new set of sanctions on some of Russia’s largest companies and financial ins utions,” Obama said. “What we are expecting that the Russian leadership will see, once again, that its actions in Ukraine have consequences, including a weakening Russian economy and increasing diplomatic isolation.”

The Obama administration is sharing some intelligence and non-lethal equipment (like night-vision goggles and armored vehicles) with the Ukrainian army, and is preparing to up its support for Ukrainian National Guard training.

But Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin joined prominent Republicans in asking Obama to go further. He called for defensive weapons to be sent to Kiev, including ammunition and anti-aircraft missiles, after a closed-door briefing with Pentagon officials.

    yeah, no warcries at all

Pfff. Posturing. No one is going to war. Russia and the US going to war would be disastrous for most of the world's economy. It would be stupidity beyond comprehension.

wake up. US vs USSR was going to happen years ago if not for a phone call John F Kennedy made to Krushev

you are really underestimating human stupidity. Let me guess, you thought TEPCO was doing a good job in Fukushima and the radiation is nothing more than eating a banana?

you seriously think Russia is not taking these aggressions as war cries????? Russia means business beleive that
