Greg Oden and Spurs Karma

It seems like whenever a FA passes on the Spurs, two things happen:

1. The Spurs prosper (and look great as it turned out); and

2. The FA who rejected the Spurs tailspins.

Look at Grant Hill in 2000.

Kidd in '03 (granted, he eventually gravytrained a le with Dallas late in the game).

The list goes on.

Now, Greg Oden.

I, for one, really wanted the Spurs to get Oden last year even though I knew he dogged it during rehab in Portland.

How wrong I was and how lucky the Spurs were.

Jason Kidd had a successful NBA career and is probably going to make the hall of fame. Grant Hill didn't do too bad for himself either despite the injuries. Greg Oden had already flamed out before we were interested in signing him.

The Spurs were going to sign and trade Tony Parker for Kidd in '03 -- that would have been a bad move. And Kidd was in charge of whether it happened.

Grant Hill in 2000 would have severely hampered the Spurs ability to make the moves that got them les in '05 and '07. Hill may have done okay for himself, but any team that gave him max money for several years starting in 2000 was screwed, pure and simple.
