Currently without Mills the Aussie Boomers are playing teams in Europe and played France the European Champions (with Diaw etc). Guess who won. The Aussies. Guess who has been the topscorer. Believe it or not - BAYNES.
Baynes had another standout game in the green and gold, posting a team-high 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field to go with nine rebounds in the win.
This production has typified Baynes’ efforts in Nice, averaging more than 16 points and eight rebounds in the three-game stay on the French coast.

Does anyone know if there is a legitimate threat of losing Baynes to a Euro team? From what I understand, he has to be offered something the spurs would consider overkill in order to leave to another NBA team.. The extra spot could be useful later on, but I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't be disappointed if he couldn't reach his potential with the silver and black

Awesome. Hopefully he supplants Errors as the 5th big in next season's rotation.

I understand, but I hope this isn't making bad blood between the Spurs and Baynes. If a Euro team offers him more money, does Baynes have to let the Spurs match? Or could he already be upset that the Spurs didn't offer him more to begin with and just leave?

No. Matching only applies to NBA teams. Remember Josh Smith leaving the Hawks and going to Greece?

In the larger scheme of things, Baynes just isn't all that important. The Spurs manage their cap by NOT paying end of the bench guys more than end of the bench money. I'll leave you with this little gem from a Baynes article:

"There were 14 Spurs who appeared in at least 10 games and averaged 10 or more minutes per contest last season, and Baynes wasn’t one of them."

Just shows what a period of time being in the Spurs system does for a guy who is willing (and able - as opposed to Ayers) to learn from the experience.

The cult of Baynes here makes me laugh, especially since most of you on Ayres, who is much closer to an average NBA player than Baynes.

    Baynes FG% .436
Ayres FG% .580 (even with all of the dropped passes and missed dunks)

Baynes can't put the ball in the hole on offense, and is defensively challenged.

The presenting OP had to do with how Baynes is doing this summer for his NT. Averaging 16 points and 8 assists is not doing badly, and does sort of belie the "can't put the ball in the hole on offense" theme. My observation really had to do with the extent to which the Spurs system helps players develop whatever talents they have. Do I believe that Baynes may have more upside than he showed before he came here? Yes. Do I think that Ayers has improved materially since he got here? Not so much

My comment regarding Ayres ( I don't on ANY player - if you don't believe me - check out my posts ) was for the purpose of distinguishing that Ayres is also willing to do whatever he is told to the extent that he can, imo...thus the distinction between willingness and ability.

Hasn't Ayers been in the Spurs system longer than Baynes? (I honestly don't remember exactly)...which, if so, reinforces my comment regarding the Spurs system helping players.

In other words, don't get your panties in a wad over MY comments. If you want to challenge someone about crapping on Ayers, pick someone who doesn't refer to him by his real name, as I always do.

Josh Childress, who's decision has become something of a cautionary tale, since he's never really been able to get fully back into the NBA since his stint in Greece.

Last year, he was with the Pelicans briefly and scored as many NBA points as I did.

Errors was given ample opportunity and even given solid minutes with starters and second string players early on which I think skews their stats when trying to compare... tbh.

Spurs carried both Ayers and Baynes on the roster last year. I don't see why they couldn't do it again.

Pop is going to play whichever one plays the best so having a little compe ion on the bench should benefit both of them.

Unless Baynes gets ridiculous big-man money, which is possible, the Spurs will be happy to match it. I'd like to see Aron get more minutes.

These are just 'practice games', not really compe ive. I'm sure nobody in the French team was willing to mix it up with Baynes.

Baynes is an older, less skilled Steven Adams. He's good for setting screens and bodying up the bigger C's in the league. That's pretty much it.

Luckily Baynes is our 14th man and we're arguing about signing him for loose change, not hyping him up to be the next franchise center like Adams

Thing is, the Spurs could be offending him by low balling him while paying Ayres more than double what they're offering him, so he doesn't have to let the Spurs match crap from a Euro team.

, I'll be pretty disappointed in the Spurs FO if they keep Ayres but let Baynes walk just cause they didn't want to swallow Ayres contract.

Another solid game by Baynsie today. 13 and 6 on 63% shooting. lol Exum with almost 21 minutes in game and doing nothing. Great draft there . Meanwhile, Ayres is still in got mode and fouling people at HEB.
