just to be clear, many of those groups are run my social workers who work for Methodist Healthcare Ministries. Within the field of social work and counseling there may be an overall arching theme of religiosity, but within the ethical standards and practices of those support groups, unless you go to one that is specifically written to be "Prayer for Healing" there usually isn't a religious undertone. It;s I understand your reasoning for avoiding them (based on your experience) but I did want to clear that up. Here is a link which discusses Methodist's Support group philosophy.
