I don't think you payed attention to the details. Clowney was blowing past Offensive lineman up until he was taken out. He got into the backfield pretty quick, and the wheel route was the only bad play. Put Nix, Joseph, and Cushing in the lineup, the defense will dominate.

He was also on pass coverage and taking himself out of the play by overrunning it...to be fair though, it's first pre season game. Once he develops a swim/spin move and plays better coverage, he'll be a stout defender.

Brandon Brooks has passed his physical and has been added to the active roster. Great news.

not thinking about an extension for Watt...what horrible take. He's basically their franchise player right now. He will be extended before the season is over.

Nice write up on Fiedorowicz and Prosch. Both show a lot of potential as dominant run blockers.

Just saw it was for a sixth-rounder.

at people thinking the Patriots were going to get a high pick for him. Same with Cousins.

Patriots with a power move tho. Everybody knew they wanted to dump mallet. Dumbass Houston waited for camp to end when he probably would have been their starter if they got him earlier.

I like the move, and would love to see him succeed tbh. He's already better than the starter--can't ask for a better situation to walk into imo. The team is stacked with talent on both sides, and he'll have no pressure being the b/u and all. Also, with all his years sitting, it won't take more than 8 games to find out if he's a legit starter or not.

Probably wouldn't have been able to get him for essentially Schaub, then. They needed to wait New England out to drop his value.

Just read it was for a conditional 7th. Looks good but it's still essentially a wasted year with him

Meh. They used a 3rd rounder on Mallett, sat him on the bench for 3 years, then traded him for a 6th rounder.

Classic case of Belichick playing mind games with himself while everyone refers to him as a draft day genius

In the meantime he was an insurance policy, just like garoppolo or osweiler. I thought he could have gotten more than a 7th though

Not terribly excited but not down in the dumps about it either. Texans lose a 7th round conditional pick in 2016 for a guy drafted in the 3rd round that spent the better part of 3 years under the tutelage of BB/Brady. What all this really means is, Keenum's days as a Texan are over and butt-chin O'Brien gets a backup QB who is neither worse or better than the starter.

I've never understood that "insurance policy" argument. If Brady went down at any time in the last 3 years, the Patriots would have had no shot at a superbowl, whether it was Ryan Mallett or Avante at QB.

They also had Brian Hoyer before they drafted Mallett.

Well yeah if it's season ending, you could say that for any team and backup qb's would be worthless. But if you need a guy to step in and go 2-2 in a stretch and hold the fort, it's better to have a guy you've trained than to pick up some random FA veteran

I think Brian Hoyer was more than capable of going 2-2.

Certainly the difference between Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett for a 3 year period wasn't worth a 3rd round pick.

Insurance policies are for teams with mediocre to good starting QB's with stout defenses and good special teams. Teams with elite QB's don't have the luxury of adding a back up as an insurance policy because no back up QB can live up to an elite QB's play/leadership skill.

That was my point. No team as reliant on its QB as New England is ever going to have an insurance policy at backup QB.

that's a fair point. they obviously were hoping to parlay Mallet into a higher pick than what they got, but he didnt have strong preseasons
