Damn...didn't know it was that easy...was there Sunday getting some stuff and after I checked out and was headed for the front door this dude with a heavy overstuffed roller suitcase with Academy security right behind him rolls out the front door. Security guy calls to him a couple of times "Excuse me sir, excuse me sir, I need to see your receipt"...dude just flips him off and keeps rolling. Security guy stops at the curb and starts texting on his phone....never leaves the curb...the thief just rolls the suitcase to his car, loads it and drives off...the security guy never even tried to get his plate number...

Turns out it's company policy there and most big retailers that if the shoplifter gets out the front door the employees are forbidden to stop or pursue them in the parking lot. Basically with the lawsuits there is no downside to stealing from a big box store anymore...get stopped inside the store and you say you just haven't checked out yet...make it to the front door and you are home free...

What a freaking crazy world we live in...

They'll check parking lot camera and then press charges, I'm guessing.

For what? They have nothing to say anything was stolen. The POS was home free once he made it out the front door and he knew it.

Well if they have nothing on store camera, I guess you're right.

I always thought this was true; then I saw some dude try and steal some paint from the home depot and the undercover shop security tackled the dude in the parking lot and held him until the policia came.

Yup. My son works electronics at Target---they have "regular" shoplifters who everyone in the store knows! Once they hit the front door they can't do a thing about it.

It probably varies from state to state. I think here in Oregon, you have to wait for them to go out the door. Then if you are sure, you can detain them as needed.

They must have a pussy assed security agency if they aren't going to stop shoplifters.

He'd better be sure the dude stole it otherwise he gonna get paid.

Probably why the stores would rather just let a few bucks go out the front door than in a courtroom plus negative pub.

On an unrelated note, do they have video cards at Target tbh?

Yeah. The security was even ing at some kids filming the whole thing. I thought it was a tad bit excessive but then the Sheriffs came and made it more so.

I thought this was common knowledge. When my gf worked at petsmart she would tell me they are not allowed to do anything but call the police, which they don't do unless it's an armed robbery. Some lady once walked out with a 300 dollar bird cage right out the front door and they never said to her and she came back numerous times and even tried to return the stolen cage. I don't get it tbh like those loss prevention mofos at Ross, the they gonna do? I always think its funny too at Walmart they have like the oldest or slowest looking people guarding the door. Some old ass lady stopped me once when I went through self checkout and all I bought was a sandwich from the deli because I forgot to grab the receipt and she told me to wait there while she got security and I just turned around and walked away.

That's some pussy ass that stores will just let you walk off with things. I guess now it makes sense that s have to walk your XBox to the register and that games are kept behind locked glass if that's the case though.

Lol i remember when i worked for heb during my college days, every sunday this olddrunk would come in and go to the beer section. Hed grab a quart and open it and chug it even with management following him. They never called the cops. The manager would escort him out and just take the loss or pay for it. The old drunk was a homeless war vet. I hate theives but this one is the only one that made my hungover sunday mornings at work

I don't think company policies have anything to do with state laws. There have been a bunch of cases where these stores have lost suits over excessive force being used detaining someone or even employees getting injured stopping someone and suing. So for these big companies it's financially better to just let the shoplifters get away and pass those losses onto paying customers.

I was getting some Meat from the Albertsons Deli and as the woman is packing it up she says "More than usual". I ask what. And she says costumers skipping the register. In this instance it was an Asian couple in their 40's

Think about it. It's such a ridiculous idea that people wouldn't dare question that someone just wheeled right out. In this cir stance, they could probably just pull the "I don't speak English" line and say they got confused. Nonetheless

I remember the Skip Register trick was popular in High School as a way to get alcohol. Fill a court up with booze & food and be on your way. One of the local Wal-Marts has a self-checkout and I often wonder why I don't pack a little extra and "forget to scan it". Or "I did scan it but it didn't work/is broken". I remember opening an underwear pack and then being honest and closing it up. Afterwards I wondered why I didn't stick an extra few under wears in there. Wal-Mart especially is so shady that security is usually busy dealing with real crooks.

the same thing happened here at an expensive jewelry store at the mall. a lady asked to see two rolex daytonas and just ran off with them. its funny because the store is right by the entrance of the mall. i guess she was aware of this out-the-door-home-free thing.
