I understand the emphasis on trying to dictate the tempo and slow the game down. Getting into a track meet with the US is obviously suicide, so they can only hope to stretch out the clock and try to limit how many times the US gets the ball back.

That being said, that strategy is pretty damn useless when you turnover the ball after 12 seconds, give the US free fast break points, and still let them score 120.
European teams typically pass the ball very well under normal cir stances, but against Murica, they become tentative passers after a couple of turnovers.

Just look at the state of the NBA then and now. You had the Spurs in 2003 with prime 4-down Duncan leading the way, while the template of the LeBron-led Heat was just what you said, crazy athletic wings with a very aggressive defensive gameplan and lethal transition counterattacks.
But the 2014 Spurs have three legendary hall-of-famers, one very good forward in Leonard, an elite passer in Diaw, and elite three-point shooting and defense. Plus the fact that they have one of the greatest coaches of all time. Europe can copy the Spurs all they want, but they simply don't have the materials to do it.

And we have 3 americans in our starting 5, crazy athletic wings with lethal transition counterattacks too. We are like the american styled defense with european style offense

True. Spurs basketball combines the elements of European and American style basketball.
