I see Giffords as a definite Presidential Candidate....just not in 2016...
A political campaign ad that led some media outlets to describe Gabby Giffords as a “mean” and “ruthless attack dog” convinced a Republican congressional nominee on Tuesday to support reforms that prohibit convicted stalkers from owning guns.
A spokesperson for Republican Martha McSally, who is running for the Congressional seat Giffords held before she was shot in the head in 2011, confirmed to the Huffington Post that McSally now supports legislation that would prohibit all people convicted of misdemeanor stalking “from obtaining guns in other states where stalking can also be a misdemeanor.” Currently, federal law prohibits some individuals convicted of misdemeanor domestic abuse from obtaining firearms but only nine states bar those convicted of misdemeanor stalking from owning a gun.
McSally’s change of heart came after GIffords’ super PAC, Americans for Responsible Solutions, ran an ad featuring a woman who recounted how her 19-year-old daughter was murdered by an ex-boyfriend. The spot criticizes McSally for opposing the expansion of gun safety laws. “Martha McSally opposes making it harder for stalkers to get a gun,” the woman says. “I don’t think she really understands how important that is to a lot of women.”
The ad caused a media outrage. The Arizona Republic described the commercial as a “nasty piece of work” and Politico complained that the spots represent some of “the nastiest ads of the campaign season.” McSally too lashed out against the Solutions ad, noting that she herself had been a victim of stalking. But until Tuesday, she stood by her opposition to “expanding those laws that will do little to prevent violence and infringe on the rights of law abiding citizens.”
Pia Carusone, a spokeswoman for Solutions, described McSally’s evolution as “great news,” adding that “This issue is not going to be effectively addressed in Congress unless there are Republicans who are willing to stand up to the gun lobby and do the right thing.” The PAC has agreed to pull down the advertisement.
According to FBI data, 34 percent of all homicides of women in Arizona were committed by an intimate partner and 61 percent of those murders were committed with a gun.
Yet Arizona does not prohibit people convicted of misdemeanor stalking or similar crimes from owning a gun. Under state law, individuals must only give up their firearms while they are on probation for a domestic violence misdemeanor conviction.
