Well, I'm equally as optimistic with the Daye trade.
Let's put it this way, Toronto got nothing.... DeColo eventually signed elsewhere.
Spurs get a 15th round pick (with all the upside that comes with that).
Warning to any NBA team thinking about pursuing a sign-and-trade deal with the San Antonio Spurs for restricted free agent Aron Baynes: Walk away.
Basically says that the Spurs get the best out of most transactions although their characterization of the DeColo for Daye trade seems a bit optimistic.

I still think Bogdan Bogdanovic is an excellent trade target for the Spurs. He has chemistry with Bertans. His skill-set would be perfect for the Spurs, with an aging Parker and retired Manu.
Bogdanovic showed some very solid potential, he is long, can play 1 / 2 but could also play some 3. I like him a lot but I don't believe the Suns would trade him for Baynes. Suns seem should be happy with their pick and probably will bring it sooner than later.
Bogdan was this years Gobert.
not sure I understood what you meant
Bogdan is closer to a finished product than gobert imo. I believe Gobert ceiling is higher but of both Bogdan is the closest to contribute significantly to a nba team... and yes I'm aware Rudy is playing for the Jazz.
they both coulda, and might woulda been spurs if they'd lasted just a few picks longer.
Daye's numbers from SL play are misleading. The points totals are decent, but it took him a lot of shots to get them in most of the games.
Daye sucks and the spurs made a mistake by not cutting him earlier before his salary was fully guaranteed. that deal was a wash
honestly i'd rather we didnt trade de colo and then he signed elsewhere. instead we have a roster spot committed to daye
Grant Hughes probably isn't doing the Spurs any favors writing an article like that.
the article doesn't even make a good point. if the spurs are so amazing at finding talent, then wouldn't baynes then qualify as one of those talents?
they used Neal as an example but we didn't even extend him a QO, which he did do with Aron
The Spurs did extend neal a qualifying offer. It was a low ball offer, but still a QO nevertheless.
Neal and DeColo are both examples of players excelling in the Spurs system. If San Antonio was so great at cultivating talent those guys would have been good for their new teams.
Then again, maybe it's just motivation...guys like Blair and Neal only seemed to play great against us.
In a telling move, though, the Spurs decided they no longer wanted him in 2013. They withdrew their qualifying offer, making him an unrestricted free agent
The only good point in this article is that some players work well under SPURS's system do not work well under other teams' systems. SPURS do not always win in trades (e.g. Scola's trade)
The amount of the QO is determined by a formula in the CBA. We have no idea how much the Spurs may have offered Neal at the outset of his free agency. My guess has always been that it was similar to what he finally got from the Bucks. Neal and his agent had delusions of an MLE-sized offer.
then again DeColo never excelled on a Spurs jersey except on some few occasions
Author needs to remember Richard Jefferson
Come on, Yao. You spent almost a decade in the NBA; you should know better than to deal with the Spurs.
I bet Yao remembered the Scola deal pretty well.![]()
Just an article written by another guy who doesn't know why the Spurs are successful. Nothing to see here.
The sad thing is, RJ should have flourished in the Spurs system. Seeing him on the Spurs I learned just how overrated he was.
Really bad article. His examples are crap with the exception of the Hill and KL deal. Spurs have had plenty of lousy moves over the past 10 years: Jefferson, Mason Jr., Ayres, Daye, Butler. The Spurs moves are usually small so it never really hurts them when things don't work out except for the whole Jefferson mess.
