Damn...that's pretty good. And I always liked Joe Pesci. But in hindsight...not a bad choice.
He was pretty convincing in goodfellas, but was laughable playing the same role in Casino. It's funny because for a short period of time, Pesci and his 5'4 frame was the epitome of badass .
I think you hit the nail on the head. He played the same role in almost everything else he ever did which ended up making him a caricature. He went to Lethal Weapon which was a comedy/drama and played the same guy. Which makes everything he does seem like comic relief.

The real life mafia guy he was playing in Casino, Tony Spilotro, was only 5'6", and was as nasty as the character Pesci played.
The real life guy Pesci played in Goodfellas, Tommy DeSimone, was way more of a sociopath than Pesci's character in the movie.
