No insult. It's really a compliment to KA. The worst player he can become is Boris Diaw, which in reality, is really good.![]()
you dont get it. Boris is so much better than the overrated overhyped Pg who cant shoot a jumper to save his life.![]()
I get what your coming from. So you think Kyle can be better than Rondo? Overhyped or not. OK ok Best case : Rondo with a jumpshot lol just speculating
this was my biggest red flag on him when we drafted him. for all his passing skills and IQ and whatever, if you are going to be a perimeter player for the spurs, you are going to have to make your spot up shots. as a rookie, its not like he's going to be the primary point-forward off the bench and needs to be effective off the ball. if he can't beat a closeout because his shot is too slow, it could cause problems. he was accurate in college this last year (made 48% of his threes) but i think he needs to spend time with Chip the same way Kawhi did.
if he is able to speed up his release, with his natural length and high release he will work just fine. his playmaking can feed off of that, sort of like regular season Marco
if he's able to latch on, i would imagine his ball handling role will increase over time, but not anytime soon
He can work his release, Spurs system will give him some open looks with plenty of time (see Matt) so for me that's not the biggest red flag. The biggest red flag is on the defensive end. I'm not sure what kind of players he will be able to defend.
His first step and lateral quickness are really bad tbh he will be blown by most of modern SFs or guards. We can try to hide him against low athletic non scoring bigs but elite teams often don't have this kind of player, he will be limited on a lot of match ups. Off the bench issue is less critical but even that we can question his capability to hold his ground.
I don't know if he needs to have a quick release, just as long as it is accurate. If its accurate then they'll rush at him and he can fake and put it on the floor where hes in his element.
Anderson should be able to avoid getting his shot blocked no matter how slow the release is. But it might be hard for him to get clean looks at the basket during hard-closes. Players like Green have really quick releases, so they're open even if their men are just a step or two away. Anderson's man can play off him while still being able to recover and get a hand in Kyle's face. That hurts spacing, while also allowing Anderson's man to play for the drive until Kyle commits to the shot.
I think he'll be able to defend well enough to say on the floor if the other wings are all good defenders. He's not much slower than Beli, but Anderson has better length and recovery instincts. You put Splitter behind him, and Kyle can do a decent job of funneling his man to the appropriate side. What Anderson has to work on most defensively is his help instincts. He's just too slow to recover to his man after providing any help. He has great instincts in playing passing lanes and getting help blocks, but he gambles too much with how little his margin of error is.
Also, Anderson needs some bulk regardless of what position his plays. Leonard bullied him in the post, and while Kawhi is a good post player, Anderson has to be able to guard his man in a phone booth, because he sure can't take him on an island.
ya with Splitter, Green and Kawhi on the floor he sure can stay on the floor, problem is there are few chances he can see a lot of PT with them. He will have some PT with the second unit... scary thing you could imagine him with Beli at the same time...
I agree on your second point, so let's sum up difficult to keep up with Guards / SFs, will have hard time against mobile bigs or bulky bigs who can score, we cannot hide him much on the second unit knowing supposedly he won't see a lot of minutes with first unit.
That's gonna be his biggest challenge imo
Davis? Eh, looked like kawhi though. Plus couldn't see it clearly since I was checking it on my phone in class.![]()
Green's almost the best he can be already IMO. All he has to do is get that runner or mid-range shot to fall with more consistency and he'll be there. Don't know if that is essential but it would help definitely. But, I think in happy with his play as is on offense as a whole (still makes dumb decisions at times in terms of passing, can't dribble, and not a finisher in traffic, but I can't see those thing markedly improving if any). Kawhi OTOH I agree with you on. He'll have to be able to put the ball in the hole and take more of a scoring load. Manu's stress fracture at the end of the season is a sign of whats to come with him in terms of how much we can rely on his health (even in the limited time he plays). Kawhi's gotta be the guy that picks up the slack.
Chip Engeland will fix that slow release for sure. The nice thing though is that it is a high release, so given his height and reach, it's going to be very tough to close out on. The key to Anderson is that he doesn't get off the ground much when he shoots, so this gives him the option of easily faking his opponent and either penetrating or taking yet another shot.
With Anderson and Daye as additional weapons in hitting the 3, the Spurs seem to be unstoppable going into this season.
The Spurs play mostly team defense. Splitter can barely jump but he has a lot of praise for his defense. Heck, Duncan can also barely jump but his like a fly swatter in defense. You can attribute this to his length. Fortunately, Anderson has a lot of length and that's very useful in defense.
Splitter and Duncan are really bad example there tbh
splitter is pretty bulky and one of the best p&r defender in the league, he can chase bigs shooting long 2s or jumpers, his first step and lateral quickness are mostly fine. No need to comment on Timmy.
No. The Spurs play man defense almost exclusively. Just because they're good at helping each other doesn't change that. I agree that Anderson would be fine if surrounded by good defenders, but his inability to guard his man would be a major liability. Kyle himself is good in team defense, but as I said above he is too slow to recover after providing help, so that will limit his effectiveness there as well.
Man relax.
i see a bunch of people saying kyle won't be able to guard his man. That he's gonna get blown by. It's a just speculation at this point. Let him play an NBA game first lol. The way KA plays this year will not dictate the Spurs' success this season. There definitely will b some growing pains, but I feel too many people are sleeping on Anderson. lol at everyone freaking out.
I agree that it's just all speculation that he'll get blown by frequently be the opponent. I have no idea how slow he is, nor do I know if his length would make him effective in defense.
However for all these folks who keep worry about lack of athleticism, look at the Spurs..... who are the athletes?
Duncan - Can't even jump an inch off the floor.
Splitter - Rarely can dunk with authority despite being 6'11"
Parker - Can barely dunk the ball.
Mills - At 5'11" compensates mostly by being a pest. Not even sure he can dunk, but there's rumor that he can.
Bonner - Really slow feet.
Belinelli - Barely gets off the floor with his jump shot.
Diaw - Rumor has it that he used to be athletic, but with all that weight, he barely gets off the floor.
Ginobili - Loss alot of athleticism since his younger days. Used to be athletic, but age catches up.
Daye - Runs like he has cement shoes on.
The only real athletes are:
Leonard - Doesn't have crazy vertical jump, but compensates with his length.
Green - However doesn't seem to have lateral quickness.
Ayres - Sometimes misses dunks.
Joseph - Has average athleticism for an NBA player.
Baynes - Seems to have some lift, but I'm not sure.
So I don't care if Anderson appears unatheletic.... the entire team consists mostly of unathletic people!
Anderson, if he improves his shooting (which likely he will being coached by Chip) has a lot of upside.
