Ernie has always been a Tim (and a Spurs) fan and he was only one who chose Tim outright. No one in their right mind knew how fast Shaq would fall off though. Everyone had Shaq & Tim, but yeah the fan vote was pretty pointless back then with the Kobe fade away loving fans.
