The theories of evolution and the Big Bang are real and God is not “a magician with a magic wand”, Pope Francis has declared.

Speaking at the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, the Pope made comments which experts said put an end to the “pseudo theories” of creationism and intelligent design that some argue were encouraged by his predecessor, Benedict XVI.

Francis explained that both scientific theories were not incompatible with the existence of a creator – arguing instead that they “require it”.

“When we read about Creation in Genesis, we run the risk of imagining God was a magician, with a magic wand able to do everything. But that is not so,” Francis said.

He added: “He created human beings and let them develop according to the internal laws that he gave to each one so they would reach their fulfillment."

Evolution has been accepted as scientific fact since 1870, about a decade after Charles Darwin published The Origin of Species. Anyone with half a brain acknowledges that evolution is true. The fact that so many people are so surprised that Pope Francis does so too shows how low they've set the bar for him.

The Pope is still an influential figure, going back a 1000 years. There is only one CC, not 1000s of fractured, often bizarro, sects of huckstering Protestantism.

His stand on evolution isn't revolutionary. The CC has for a long time accepted "mitigated" biological/human evolution where God steps in to infuse the soul ( ). That's clearly way ahead of the Bible-humping creationists.

However, at the recent bishops' hangout, he proposed to his hater bishops, mimicking the man-made hate of the Christian Taliban, to think about gays and divorced people more charitably. THAT IS, yet again for him, revolutionary. I hope Fran can stick around for long time.

I/me....have no idea at all about how all this came about and neither does anyone else. So ya grab onto....theories...or religious beliefs none of which have ever been proven. Being it takes so many different factors to pull this off I think it's foolish to not see how it took a designer. To think it all came about by chance......how could it?

I don't mind some good natured ribbing on my beliefs on here by the way, it goes with the territory.

Just because we disagree on theology does not mean we disagree on evolution.

But on every issue there are small quirks that promote differences of opinion.
