Looks like it was just out of frustration after committing the foul. You can hear him yelling " !" a few times...he either didn't like the camera man getting a close up of him jawing to himself, or simply slapped at the nearest thing to him at the moment which happened to be a camera lens.
Either way, that's definitely a lighter wallet, if not a one-game suspension.

There are Phantom slow-motion cameras, still photographers, and normal broadcast cameras along the baseline. All of them are pretty crucial to media coverage of NBA games. They're also used to allow officials to make correct calls during replay.
It's pretty far from "pointless." There's definitely a point to it. Like it or not, media coverage allows the NBA to continue to exist. Accommodating the media is part of being an NBA player.
