as ElNono stated, there are underlying factors that lead to poverty. never did i attempt to pin welfare as the reason for poverty. its a useful resource, but like we've seen throughout government, simply throwing money at a problem doesn't solve it. you can't take the poor folks, throw 'em a few bucks, and expect things to get better. its plugging the hole instead of fixing the problem. people get used to having the holes plugged and keep going along with the routine. this is why, as mentioned, the longer one is in poverty and on welfare, the more likely they are to remain in that situation...

this is why instead of a program that just indefinitely throws change at the poor, i'd favor a program aimed at teaching them how to take care of themselves

I think the real problem here is that there is no problem. GOP types like the bring up foreign aid and en lements not medicare and SS when the real fiscal issue is the baby boomers retiring after running up deficits for the 40 years they dominated the electorate.

Reagan, Clinton, Bush 2, and Obama have all given massive tax cuts and when Bush Sr tried to raise taxes they voted him out. The Tea Party bull from 2 years ago was them once again and to mention cutting baby boomer en lements is political suicide.

OTOH, voter fraud and AFDC abusers are the real problem. . .

Social darwinism? Or you think there is a better way to feed people and support indigent families?

no. as i said earlier, throwing money at them and hoping they take care of themselves isn't a long term solution.

so if doing nothing at all for the poor is not on the table then I am not sure what to tell you. They already have job training requirements etc. The states that tried the drug testing ended up spending a ton of money for nothing.

What would that program look like, and how would it take care of the immediate monetary needs they might have?

IMO, this is what it boils down to when you look at the numbers for this "dependency problem"... does dependency exists? Yes. Is it substantive enough to warrant basically screwing over everybody else on welfare? No, it's not.

That's why I was asking if they "buy" the welfare queen story.

St Ronnie's "welfare queen" and "young buck" were lies, frame-setting that (black) people on public assistance were welfare cheats, were physically capable, and were not really "poor".

We heard the same thing a few years ago from VRWC stink tank Heritage saying if people have a TV, a/c, refrigerator, cellphone, then they are really not (Mumbai beggar) poor , but actually very comfortable on taxpayer support, mooching/taking.

More recently, the Repug dystopia NC (Tillis!) cut unemployment severely to force the unemployed to go get all those wonderful jobs begging to be filled. NC unemployment rate didn't budge, but of course the real
Confederate objective was to punish freed n!gg@s for being freed n!gg@s.

Nationwide, there are still 3 job seekers for every available job. Employers love that, over supply of labor keeps ty wages ty, and avg work week at 47 hours.

I don't think the Repugs "believe" the St Ronnie cheating, un-poor Welfare Queen lie (they know it's a lie, they fabricated it), but it's fundamental to the Repug strategy of destroying the safety net "for the non-poor's own good" while protecting/enriching their corruptors the BigCorps and 1%.

I can't find the poll now, but I read the greedy, tax-evading super-wealthy 1% say that they don't want their taxes that they can't evade to be spent on the safety net. More spenton jets, ships, wars (and other MegaCorps the wealthy invest in), sure, but not on the safety net.

    Yeah I am with you.

Thing is that the black/chicano woman having 10 kids earning AFDC and section 8 for each who will then grow up and vote democrat ties into the fear of minorities that is the basis of the GOP.

There are a group of white boomers that I work with and when I bring up how election day should be on a weekend and that we should make it easier for people to vote, they all state "I used to think like that but to tell you the truth I don't know that I want those people voting."

I just love white boomer men in Texas.

It's a real fear n the GOP and while certain segments recognize it, for example the RNC chair, but despite that they do nothing but try and mitigate the tide. Gerrymandering is a dike but the water level is rising.

Fox News Drops Ben Carson As A Contributor

Fox News said on Friday that it had severed its relationship with former pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson amid speculation that he's planning a 2016 presidential run, the Washington Post reported.

Carson is a major conservative activist and commentator, and he had joined the Fox News Channel as a contributor, frequently using his position to criticize President Obama.

A Fox News spokesperson told the Post that Carson understood the rationale behind the decision and that the two parties separated amicably.

Carson was reportedly preparing to air an hour-long self-promotional video “introducing himself to the American people,” ABC News reported. Fox's decision to cut ties with Carson happened inmuch the same way as it had with former Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown (R), who was a contributor for the channel before he launched a failed 2014 bid for a U.S. Senate seat in New Hampshire.

Allen West To Head Up ‘Think’ Tank. Stop Laughing, You Guys, It’s Not Funny.

According to a big ol’ press release, come Jan. 2, 2015, the former disgraced colonel and former one-term congressman will become CEO of the “National Center for Policy Analysis,” a Dallas-based think tank that shills for the oil and insurance industries and thinks that global warming is a big conspiracy. And yes, it probably gets money from Koch Industries, too.

West is understandably excited about his opportunity to continue riding the rightwing gravy train contribute to the work of this important ins ution:

“I am humbled and honored to have this opportunity to lead one of the country’s preeminent think tanks,” said West. “I have long admired the NCPA’s innovative research in health care, tax reform, en lements, retirement, energy, environmental and education policy.”

“It will be policy, not politics that secures a sound economic future for Americans — with growth, opportunity and returning the promise of the American dream for this generation and those to come,” West added.

Translation: With revenue from my stupid inaccurate book starting to peter out, I sure am glad I landed somewhere I can keep grifting off donors to rightwing causes!

    Per the glowing press release:

Allen is a true Policy Patriot, bringing many years of public service experience to the NCPA. He joined the military in 1983 and served in Operation Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Afghanistan. Over his 22 years of service in the U.S. Army, he received numerous commendations and honors for valor, including a Bronze Star, three Meritorious Service Medals, three Army Commendation Medals and a Valorous Unit Award.

Also, there was the sudden end to West’s service in 2003, with an ultimatum that he resign or be court-martialed after staging a mock execution of an Iraqi prisoner, but they can’t be expected to include every little detail. Besides, he had to torture the dude, as he testified at his hearing:

“I know the method I used was not right, but I wanted to take care of my soldiers,” West testified to a military courtroom of observers and some teary-eyed troops formerly under his command.

    as West puts it:

We want to align ourselves with the fundamental principle of governance of America as a Cons utional Republic and promote the principles of limited government, fiscal responsibility, individual sovereignty and free market economy. We should focus not on party but rather effective and efficient governing policy. We want our message to reach the kitchen tables of the everyday American.

NCPA is just another Kock Bros financed VRWC stink tank spewing anti-govt lies in the network of VRWC stink tanks.

Darrell Issa retweets photos of war criminals, Nazis, Timothy McVeigh while honoring vets

part of a Twitter campaign to celebrate Veterans Day, Congressman Darrell Issa unwittingly retweeted photos of war criminals, Nazis, and mass murderers sent in to him by Twitter jokesters.

Issa , the Republican representative from San Diego County who has pushed Congressional investigations of Benghazi, Fast and Furious, and other ‘scandals,’ kicked off his #AmericaVets campaign on Friday, posting a picture of himself taken when he was in jump school at Ft. Benning in 1975, according to the Daily Mail.

“Jump school at Ft Benning, 1975. Tweet your vet photos with #AmericasVets to celebrate Veterans Day! #FlashbackFriday,” the congressman tweeted.

Mixed in with photos of uniformed fathers, brothers, uncles, and grandfathers sent in by followers, Issa also received photos of Nazi Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler, JFK assassin Lee Harvey Oswald, convicted My Lai massacre war criminal William Calley, and Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh, all of which were posted on Issa’s timeline.

Under the photo of Himmler — architect of the Final Solution resulting in death of six million Jews — Butt C. Planet wrote, “ darrellIssa My late grandfather who served in the European theater in WWII #AmericaVets.”

Go-Gurt Darfur identified Lee Harvey Oswald as, “my uncle Lee in 1956.”

Alerted to the fact that he had been pranked, Issa or a staffer deleted most of the tweets, but a William Calley picture remained up on Sunday night.

Ben Carson Will Crack Down On Non-Citizens Committing Voter Fraud By Revoking Their Citizenship

Carson also demanded that the government begin deporting undo ented immigrants for the extremely rare incidents of voter fraud… and revoking the citizenship that they do not have:

“Anyone caught involved in voter fraud should be immediately deported and have his citizenship revoked.”
