the Cold War was a huge part of Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove, but in 2001 it's sort of referenced. The scene where NASA guy has a drink with the Ruskies, and he won't go into details about what they found on the moon. So subtle reference imo, but it's more about something greater pushing us into evolution, then overcoming our own creations to take the next step, at least that's how I interpret it. I do remember 2010 having some really obvious, Rocky IV type in regards to Russia, like wasn't there a shot where the Russian and Americans have to grab hands in space or something?

I do remember one cheeseball line that has stuck with me since...when they first go on the Odyssey, Chief Brody says something like "you are now on United States territory" or some . I just remember feeling very bad for him and the writer who thought that was a good line.

what are your thoughts on the new SW teaser? supposedly the black dude lays down pipe in that cute white chick, and it's that coal burning which allows the Dark Side to regain power. I have no problem with black matt damon, as long as he's not the main character, that seems like box office poison imo.
Hopefully the camera work isn't too obnoxious, instead more Kurosawa like the original. That one shot of the X-wings along the water is pure badass though.

tbh, Lando needed a friend. I'm sure Abrams will do fine; from what I read, he was more of a Star Wars fan growing up than Star Trek. Plus, as long as there are no JarJars or cutesy talking battle droids, it will already be better than any of the prequels. And the fact that it wasn't green screened to death like with what Lucas did is a plus as well. Disney knows how to make money, that much is certain. I'm sure the movie will be fine.

The movie doesn't need to be a work of art for them to print money for the next 20 years. It just needs to be competent.

Well the book and movie were released at a height of evil empire red hysteria. IIRC that line was stated because the US and USSR were at acute loggerheads during the joint mission, and both parties were forced to stay in their own country's ship when the situation came to a head.

I like 2010 way more than most so I fan't really argue with anyone who doesn't like it. I just look at it as a movie on its own and not as a follow up to one of the most influential movies ever made. Expectations are too great that way.

I just think there is probably a reason in the story the saber is like that. I don't think it's just another lightsaber design for the sake of a new design. Don't think Abrams would do that.

How do you protect the hilt of a lightsaber? lol It's going to cut through anything except another lightsaber light... maybe find a way to wrap the light so that it has a fencing sword look to it?
