No scientist I know has ever said that turtles had sex with starfish. Evolution doesn't work that way. Different species don't mate with one another. Rather, turtles and starfish have a common ancestor of the same species from which they are both descended.

Due to the mechanisms of random variation from genetic mutation and natural selection, animals of the same species come to occupy different ecological niches, mate with the same species within their own subgroup, and then pass on their specialised genes to the next generation. This goes on for several generations across millions of years, until finally, the animals become so different that they become entirely different species altogether.
