Rondo is massively overrated, but he's still a nice upgrade considering the detritus the Mavs had at PG. Good gamble to get on the cheap. In poker terms, they basically threw in a couple of chips to potentially win a massive pot.

For good reason, Cuban really trusts RC. He's just trying to take smart gambles with as much talent as possible and let RC/Dirk do work. I think Mavs thought that PG was their biggest concern and went after the most talent they could get for cheap. Had the following checkboxes:
o Talented PG
o Reasonable Price
o Splashy Name / Ticket Draw
o As Early in the Season as Possible

Rondo has a career FG% 21 points higher than Kirby, including 23 points higher this season... so you're saying he "can't shoot" when he's a better shooter than Karl Malone's ?
It's definitely an upgrade, but I'm not sure how significant. We'll have to see how he meshes with the team. Rondo-Ellis is an interesting pairing, potentially very potent. From the few times I've seen Dallas play, I actually have liked the way Devin Harris has been playing a lot. I thought he should have been starting for the Mavs. Not sure if they prefer him off the bench anyway to minimize the risk of injury, but he's been good for them. I did like Brandan Wright a lot for the Mavs too so I think that's a little bit of a loss.
I'd expect Rondo to improve the team's defense. But I thought the Mavs offense was already really, really good, so I'm not sure how much better Rondo's driving and passing ability will make it, plus he will limit the touches Monta and Parsons will have in the half court set. Not the amount of shots, but the touches to facilitate and go into iso.
One thing is for sure though, with the better scorers and shooters Rondo has now, he could definitely start assist padding if he wants to.

Being an efficient scorer doesn't mean the player is a good "shooter." Rondo is a career 25% three point shooter, career 61% free throw shooter. He can't shoot. He scores efficiently because he attacks the basket and is a good finisher at the rim for a guard and he limits his outside shooting. Rondo is not a good shooter.
Would be wise of RC to play Rondo with Dirk at all times and as little with Monta and Parsons as possible.
although I'm sure nothing comes from it, some inside Mavs reporters said they are getting word that Dallas is making contact with Ray Allen, and probably Emeka Okafor.
And unless something better is out there, they probably sign Jermaine O'Neal. I believe they have already talked to him in the past, and he lives in the metroplex currently.

they already were, even with Wright. He's a horrid defender. They needed to find a way to bolster the defense. And against elite defensive teams, Wright tended to have problems and be ineffective. I loved Wright, but their offense is so good with or without him. They needed defense at the center position.
