If he doesn't get a minimum of $4-6 million a year for his staff it'll be all for very little.

He needs a compe ive and upcoming group to ensure a quick turnaround. If he has to do everything with washouts and retreads, he'll mirror RichRod.

Hope he does well there. I still like Harbaugh, but I don't think York was totally wrong in firing him. Harbaugh kind of needs that top dawg status, which he'll get more of at Michigan. He should at least be successful, but who knows how long he'll stay put.

He took less money (5m/7 years) so he could have more for his staff. In his press conf yesterday he said he always wanted to coach at Michigan (dad coached here, he's also an alumni) do all signs point to him being here for a while.

If Michigan gives him 5 million to spend on a staff now that he's taken less, he'll be able to really piece a great staff together. If Michigan is smart, they give him 7-8 million and let him pick whomever he wants. Get 3/4 up-coming recruiters for positional staff, then two great coordinators and one recruiting specialist.

The deal is worth up to $40 million over the 7 years, adding in the $2 million signing bonus and yearly incentives. Reportedly, he didn't want to be the highest paid coach in college or even in the Big Ten with Meyer and D'Antonio in the conference and how they've proved their worth. And yes, allegedly he wanted his assistant coaches to be paid relatively well also. If true, in theory it's good for Michigan and reflects well on Harbaugh... if true. But don't get it twisted. The "$5M per" is also deceiving. Not only does Harbaugh have the signing bonus and incentives, but there's also a deferred compensation clause in his contract wherein the AD can re-evaluate after every year and give him additional bonuses based on success and market value of other coaching hires which will be paid later on. I guess other coaches have this clause. So if the Michigan AD feels like Harbaugh may leave after a couple seasons and he's very successful, don't be surprised to hear that he's getting crazy extra bonuses where he gets closer to that $8M per that was initially reported.

As far as his staff goes, so far reports say he's bringing in USC O-line coach Tim Drevno as his OC. As soon as Florida plays their bowl game, it's assumed that the interim HC DJ Durkin will join Harbaugh as his DC. They have both worked with Harbaugh before and apparently highly regarded as assistant coaches. And if Drevno is as good as reported with the O-line and helping the running game, that's a big plus because those are two areas Michigan has struggled greatly in recent years, despite recruiting well with the O-line and running back positions. I really don't know about college football assistant coaches, so time will tell, but both additions have been written about as good hires (if the Durkin hire goes down).

The DC under Hoke, Greg Mattison, will also stay on the staff, presumably as the linebackers coach and recruiter, which is huge as he's actually been a very good coach in his time at Michigan, and pretty influential in recruiting thanks to his NFL experience. The big assistant coach name the Wolverines are going after is Kentucky's Vince Marrow, a TE coach who is said to be a great recruiter, particularly in Ohio and the midwest in general. He's been offered a position already and they're waiting for an answer. I'm guessing Marrow is waiting to see if Kentucky makes a huge bid to keep him around.

Tyrone Wheatley might also be joining the staff as well. From what I've read, the names so far look to make for a pretty good staff. Whoever else is going to be on it, they need to get that stuff done asap because Michigan only has 6 commits and the highly rated undecided recruits are running out as more and more are starting to announce their commitment decisions.
