Even a small truck in only going to get in the mid-20's on gas. Probably going to need to go with a small car like a Corolla if you want to get good gas mileage.
Planning to get a used vehicle....might get a compact truck or something smaller for fuel efficiency. I travel a lot and live on the coast. Any ideas?
I want to keep it below 13k in price.

2010 Mazda 3 isn't a bad option. Sporty look, good gas mileage and reliable.
Get a Prius.
petrol is cheap now
even if u be a tightarse on petrol or car, the amount u save u going to spend it on other stupid
leaning towards a 4wd ford ranger right now tbh that i can put a small lift kit on and some tires. i go offroad a lot for work.
now's the only time i can get away with it since we're still starving putin into submission.

Well since you go off-road a truck is definitely needed. I've had both a Ford Ranger 4wd and a Chevy Silverado 4wd. The Ford died at 110,000 miles...the Chevy is at 300,000 miles and still ticking. Must admit though...a lot of the 300K miles were highway miles.
Going in on monday to look at a 2002 4wd tacoma with 135k miles on it. Seeing if I can drive off the lot with it for 7k cash up front. Will probably drive it until it can't be serviced for cheap then turn it into a ranch truck...we'll see though gotta test it out first.

The bad thing about those small trucks is they don't get any better on fuel mileage than the new full size gets. The frontier gets mileage and while the Tacoma gets better they cost as much as a damn Silverado. Just go full size tbh
yep my dad has a 2000 Silverado and that thing has had no major work and still going strong
By far the best $$$ I've ever spent on a vehicle....bar none.
actually might just get a cheap focus on save up that way i'll trade it in for a nicer new model truck in a year or so. i'll stick to trashing company vehicles in the meantime

2010/11 Jeeps are about that price and can get you the 4wd you may want. I have a 2010 Patriot and think it gets the job done.
I'd be really careful buying a jeep at that price, for starters the only way to get one that cheap is with 100k plus miles on it and at that stage a lot of the dependability is gone and it's just getting ready to start having issues. Id hate to pay 13k for something and then have to sink abother 4 to 6 grand in it when the transmission craps out and other stuff starts screwing up. Not to mention emissions issues. My last 2 years with my old car it was 1k each time to fix what needed to be fixed in order to get it inspected legally. 20 dollar part, but you have to have a lift, drop the entire tear end and fuel tank in order to access the damn thing. The first time I took a short cut to fix it myself the 2nd time I said to with it and just traded it in because of the trade in assistance rebate. Used cars are just such an unknown variable unless you know who drove it and that they maintenances it properly. You aren't going to get good life out of a vehicle just following the manufacturers recommendations, you have to go above and beyond that which most people don't. And jeeps guzzle gas worse than a truck.
Go for the mid 2000 Tacoma tbh. Has more road presence than the pre 2005 tacomas.
I once drove a military jeep when I was only 4 years old, it felt cool to drive a jeep tbh, but if you only drive through city roads everyday I don't see much necessity for you to buy a jeep just to look somewhat cool. A 10k brand new Toyota would just suffice as a vehicle imho, but of course it'd be a whole different story if you're just looking for something to show off your wealth.
If you need a small car for some rough roads,you might look at a Subaru. they have full 4 wheel drive
but they get good gas mileage. Thats all they drive in Alaska......
I won't fault the maintenance issues, as the only issues I have had so far are needing new tires and shocks (I say this now but watch...) But the price is doable. There are several at carmax to choose from here, here and here are a few (not 4wd but under 100k).
I spend the same amount on gas with my '10 Jeep as I did with my '04 Jetta, with the higher gas prices I was paying about $35 to fill it up. Now it's about $25.
is the tacoma = toyota hilux outside america?

I think the jeep gets 17 and 21..dunno about the 04 Jetta but car manufacturers have come a long way in fuel mileage since then. Even the new silverados get 18 and 24 and say a Honda accord gets 24/37
Google says my '10 Patriot gets 23/29 and the 2015 gets 23/30 (oh one mile!) the '04 Jetta got 21/28 and the '15 gets 25/37 (4 cyl, 1.8 L, Automatic (S6), Regular Gasoline). So, I see the old Jetta and Jeep as being pretty close in mileage. The Jetta jumps up the better the model you get. I just had/have a basic automatic for both.
I guess the jeep isn't 4wheel drive?? I thought we were talking about 4wd.
