It's even safe to visit Paris / Marseille next week... don't freak out. Now best season to visit France is May / June... just avoid imo the big manifestation like the "fete de la musique" in Paris and you will be fine.
Regarding palace I recommend both, they are absolutely not comparable and the experience is totally different.
Marseille is awesome place, le vieux port, easting a bouillabaisse and visit les calanques et la bonne mere

When in Paris, take a day to go to the Louvre, walk the Champs-Élysées to the Arc de triomphe, from there to the Trocadero and head down the the Eiffel Tower...
Other nice places to visit are the Notre Dame cathedral, and the Sacré-Cœur church (this one is a bit out there, but it has a terrific view of Paris)...
