Be interesting to see how long this lasts.

Just another reason LNG terminals need to get built in the US ASAP.

Eh, it will just accelerate the EU's securing other sources. Putin is screwing himself.

but the Repugs have been screaming "drill here, drill now" to obtain Energy Independence, and now Repugs and BigOil want to export as much of USA's limited NG and oil as soon, as fast possible.

Gas can come from places other than Russia.

    That's how it works.

    That's what's already happening.

That's part of the reason for this tantrum.

    Pretty much.

Cutting off supplies creates "demand destruction". Not only do you get people looking for alternative sources of the commodity, you get all sorts of knock-on decisions, as OPEC discovered after its embargo when US consumers suddenly decided they would buy cars that got 50% better gas mileage.

Putin is simply harming the long-term market for the products he wants to sell.

    http://www.gasinfocus.com/en/indicat...lng-terminals/

It will take billions and time, but there is more than enough money out there to do it, and the process has already begun.

Further a lot of these countries are going to push hard to move away from natgas simply because of national security reasons. Large government subsidies, and setting aside normally onerous red tape for such private projects get a lot easier to sell to taxpayers.

Between this, and Europe's own pushes towards renewables, does not bode well for Russia's long-term marketing prospects.

bingo. that's what I was looking for. a blanket statement "we'll just find other sources" is just that a blanket statement

it's just like me when I used to be a Comcast customer. and Comcast was the only cable supplier in my locality

I would be on the phone with them and say blanket statements like that "I'll cancel my membership and find another supplier!" the comcast ppl would just laugh at me

Short term what is his angle?

Raising prices on the gas he is no longer selling to Europe?

    This is a dumb move.

how about raising the price of his gas he sells elsewhere than Europe?

He cut by 60% to EU, not 100%, so I think he figures he can force up the world price of NG, includes what he sells, to make up for the $10Bs in lost revenue because his oil now so cheap.

what is the spot price right now on NG vs before he cut?

Pootin is DESPERATE to make up the US$100Bs revenue he's lost, is losing on the price of oil.

What else does he have to sell on the international commodity market? NG, but artificially ed up in price by this tactic.

He's trying to goose up the price of (his) NG by restricting supply in the way the Saudis have lowered the price of oil by pumping into an oil glut.
