    You really this ing stupid?

    What about...

Two years earlier, when a crowd of 93,000 came out to see WWF's Wrestlemania
... number of fans: If not a sport, then what exactly is professional wrestling? ...

That was just as the stadium, now add the pay per view audience.

    nothing? like never?

    what about this hit/collision?
I understand that there are numerous situations in which wrestlers exaggerate contact, that's pretty obvious. My argument is that overall though these guys take a beating. I'm pretty sure the times in which they were actually taking real punishment significantly outweigh the times which they exaggerated how hard they were hit, especially when you realize these people wrestle for years. I haven't watched wrestling consistently since about 2002 (I was about 11) but I tune in from time to time because wrestling was fun for me as a kid. I'm much more concerned with basketball and to a lesser extent, the UFC, than I am with the WWE at this point of my life. But it still amazes me in a sport where numerous people have suffered concussions, brain damage, and other serious life-changing and life-threatening injuries people still shrug it off and say "It's fake fighting".

Dude, been into this stuff since the late 50's, trust me.....IT'S FAKE FIGHTING...ok? Sure it's rough, sure guys get hurt, but nobody out there is really trying to hurt anyone, everything is pulled and it's as fake as it can get....ok?

These guys today go to schools that teach them how to fake it.

That's the German bad boy Fritz Von Erich, and his patented move...THE IRON CLAW. In reality he was a Texan named Jack Atkinson, who played football at SMU and in the old AFL.

It was just as fake in his day as it is today.

Kerry Von Erich vs Curt "Mr. Perfect" Hennig both second generation rasslers. Hennig's dad was....Larry "The Ax" Hennig, his claim to fame was as a tagteam partner of Harley Race.

Wrestling is dumb in the same way that comic books are dumb. I'm still able to enjoy both mediums and characters though if it's not a total show. No matter how bad the product gets, the rumble is always at least entertaining.

    Those who don't know....

Pro wrestling has its roots in the old carny challenges where a carnival wrestler would challenge local toughs to last for a set time period. Most of the time the challenger would be a plant who split the money with the wrestler. However, sometimes it became real and the carny would have to "shoot" or "hook" his opponent.
That said, pro wrestling started out as legit. It also started out long and, to large extent, boring with rest holds being the standard fare. Matches were two out of three falls and also lasted for hours. I believe Frank Gotch vs George Hackenschmidt lasted between three to five hours. In the 1930s, the Golddust Trio formed and that all changed. The Trio (which was composed of promoter Toots Mondt, legendary shooter Ed "Strangler" Lewis, and someone whos name escapes me at the moment) took wrestling back to its carny roots by scripting the outcome of the matches on their shows. Lewis was billed as their champion simply because no one (with the exception of Farmer Burns) could beat him unless he let them. The champion periodically lost the belt to keep the fans interested, but needed to be a legit badass to prevent promoters and opponents from screwing him over. When the NWA formed, Lewis's handpicked successor Lou Thesz became the World Champion for the same reason.
So, to answer your question, pro wrestling started out scripted in the 19th century, became legit in the early 20th century, and returned to its scripted roots within 30 years.

That would be when when both combatants are well aware of how important it is that neither hurts the other one because they need the work/$$$$. So both guys do all they can to give the impressive of real fighting when in reality everything is done without any actual violence involved.

The last thing a rassler wants to do is be the reason a co worker is out of work.

A guy who works stiff....meaning he's not good at pulling things....is very very unpopular in the biz and nobody wants to work with him. Big Van Vadar had that rep. Ryback has that rep.

I guess we're going to have to agree to disagree here. We all know wrestling is scripted and guys often exaggerate contact, but those guys face real pain in that ring. For that reason I don't see it as "fake fighting".

All these guys travel and pretty much live together. Like all businesses we have the good workers and the bad ones. In the rasslin' biz those with mic skills leap over those without them, usually those workers get a manager to talk for them. The last thing anyone wants to do is lay somebody up for awhile, they do all they can do to play it as safe as possible. Nobody wants to cost his co worker $$$$$$$. You hurt a couple guys and your job is on the line.
