Last week, I pondered whether or not Westbrook’s maturity would help the Thunder retain Kevin Durant in the summer of 2016, when he’s a free agent – his hometown Wizards are in play – but former Portland Trailblazers VP of Basketball Operations Tom Penn sees it another way: Westbrook’s been so good, and the team is working so well around him, perhaps Oklahoma City looks to trade Durant, rather than lose him for nothing. He was a guest on*The Herd today:

I think this burst from Westbrook makes it likelier – much more likely – that Durant ultimately gets traded next year. [Colin Cowherd explodes.]

Sam Presti has proven that he does not ever want to lose anybody for nothing. He traded James Harden a year early to avoid a potential luxury tax problem a year later.

The Kevin Durant drumbeat next year is going to be so loud … he will not commit early to OKC because the rules are against that.

If Sam Presti doesn’t that get that commitment, he’ll look to trade Kevin Durant. Looking at the performance of Westbrook and the team around Westbrook will make it easier for him to do that, potentially.

It would make sense. Lets face it, Durbeta may never be the same after he broke his foot. A lot of players have had the same injury and have never been the same. Better to see what you could get for him. Besides, he's prolly gone to Washington either way.

^ And i'm not sure you can really on Westbrook either. His decline is going to be ugly.

Yop, but he at least has another 3-4 years of playing at an elite level. If they get a coach who can somewhat control him and instill a system while getting back some elite perimeter D for Durbeta, they'd be scary.

If Durant wouldn't commit then OKC could do worse than getting Nene, Beal, Porter and 2 1st rounders for him in the summer. Not sure another team would be willing to offer more seeing as he's very likely bolting for Washington in 2016.

That package sucks. Literally the only thing of value is the two 1sts. Unless Durant clearly isn't the same they could do better with some desperate team.

Well, his mantle as big man on campus is kaput. If Russ permits him to even attempt to take it from him then I've misplaced my truss in Russ.

Durant can get in line now. That line forms behind Russ and is littered with the usual piss pots, 7' 3 point shooters, hand wringers & calendar savants.

Therein lies the misconception regarding Westbrook. He does have a ty coach, but so do a lot of other NBA players who don't ice their teammates out. No one here has a coach better than Brooks (ok maybe someone has a YMCA coach) and we know better than hero ball. You don't need a coach to tell you to involve your teammates. Russ will even talk about it after his games how he needs to involve his team more, but during the game it's always Russ, always has been and always will be.

Russ has the ability to rebound, assist, shoot, get to the rim, get to the line... he has it all on the offensive end. He's not very good on defense, but that's another story. He didn't develop all that talent by a coach telling him to. He saw what he wanted to become and worked his ass off to get there. It just didn't include a champion on a team of champions. Oh he wants to be a champ, no doubt, if he can be the main guy. He's a smart businessman, likely values business over compe ion because after all, business is another level of compe ion. Basketball is just a game, but Russ is rich and going to eventually be wealthy. He may never have a ring, but he'll have a fortune.

KD wants a ring. He's more willing to bring others into it because he had that talent since he was in high school. Russ was basically nobody when he came into the league, but KD was the 2nd overall pick (lol TLong) and should have been the 1st. KD is set and he knows it. Russ, like Jordan (never hear me say that again) has a huge chip on his shoulder and has something to prove on the court. Jordan needed several years to transition himself from a stats guy to a compe ion guy. I don't think Russ will ever do that because Russ will, like some have said, drop off like a Lithium Ion battery. Admire the guy's tenacity but don't confuse it with greatness or compe iveness. Those types transition their games to win, they don't expect the team to form to their ways.

They can't get there with Durant proving to be totally unreliable. Would his ego, , would Silver's ego in New York permit Westbrook's assumption of the mantle? No. So, Media will handle it for Silver, like they did when they lynched Sterling.

By the time it's done only the $ will keep Russ from getting a gun & running amok...maybe.

From a Spurs fan perspective, it's great for OKC to get rid of Durant. One less rival.

From a basketball fan perspective, I hope Presti learned from the Harden trade that he will keep Durant and Westbrook together, then get the right pieces to make that team into a contender for the next 6 to 7 years.

I can't imagine there's any truth to this, that would literally be the stupidest move possible unless this foot issue is actually a career altering one. But nothign suggests that, he may not have been at last year's level but I attribute that more to rust and not consistently staying on the floor. It's Kevin ing Durant you don't trade him unless he wants out, which I really don't think he does.

Durant is a bigger guy. And tall players usually have chronic foot problems.
