"Well, back in college, I helped a friend research her ancestry. Our Anthropology professor was Greek and encouraged my friend to trace her family lines because her father is Sicilian and his family had been in the U.S. for a long time. He thought she might find some "interesting" things. First, we traced her mother who is descended from a long line of Irish Pentecostals. She had one Native ancestor on that side going back a couple of hundred of years, but her mother's side is pretty typical white Southerner.
Then, we traced her Sicilian line. We were looking at census records from the 1800's and found that one of her Sicilian ancestors that was living in the South was listed as "black." She looked like she was in a state of panic.And was like, "Uh, I don't what this means!"'
