Yeah, each week we had All Star Wrestling on WUAB TV-43, a UHF station in the suburbs of Cleveland. It would open with the sound of "Classical Gas" and be hosted by Jack Reynolds. My brother & I went one time to see the taping. It was just weird seeing Johnny Powers walking around the studio in a suit. They'd spend the hour having matches and advertising the upcoming week's card at the Cleveland Arena. My father loved it and we'd go religiously.

My first memories of the rasslin; was sitting on the floor next to my grandma (she thought it was real, and so did I back then) making sure not to knock over her spit can, she chewed snuff and listening to her...."he's pulling his trunks, he's pulling his trunks, come on ref you blind"...haha!!!!!!!! We were watching...The Scufflin; Hillbillies, Ox Anderson, "Wild" Red Berry, a young Fred Blassie, Mr.Moto, Sandor Szabo, The Sharpes. It was our thing to do. I'd ride my bike over once a week to watch the rasslin' with her.

Yep, manager of Hans Mortier...Hans would apply his finishing hold-a full nelson and the only way to break it was for Red Berry to pry it lose with his cane.

Yep, thats right, The Great Mortier.

"Wild" Red Berry was huge in SOCAL for years, he was bigger than Blassie. As was Baron Leoni, Lord James Bliears. I;m talking late 50's.

When you're a child you want to believe it to be real, and yet I remember every kid asking if it was. Like Santa Claus my father would be noncommittal, that way I never knew exactly. Coming back from Akron one time (to see a show up there) we ran into Ron "The Rebel" Saunders (a third liner) at a gas station where he was having a flat tire fixed. My friends and I badgered him for like 20 minutes about "if it was real." And like my father he never divulged. Like magicians, then the rassler obeyed his code of conduct, his gentleman's agreement, his Masons creed.

As an adult one can appreciate the art of it. The bravery, the sacrifice. Thank Christ, it's fake. It warms my les to see them battle in vile hatred, hammer & tong for 15 minutes, secure in the knowledge they'll go behind the curtain afterward, the bond as sealed as it was 15 minutes past. Yes, they did that for money, but, they also did that for us.

Noway in I'd want to go back to those young n' dumb days. There is nothing like...been there/done that..and experience.

Can't beat that experience, stuff like making sure ya put your underwear on first (after a shower) before sitting down on that cold toilet seat to put on your socks.
