You're missing the point, iran and russia are allied because of geopolitical reasons. They practically almost share a border, separated by only puppet states. And Shia led syria blocked a pipeline proposal by Qatar to sell oil and gas to Europe to protect Russia's economic interests. The russian/Shia alliance is a strong one and it makes sense.
