This division winner is bull and complicates even more. Your record should determine seeding regardless of division.

Portland has a tougher schedule than LA after tomorrows game.

If they win tom, still a lot of tough games...if LA wins tom, they only have to play one very good team the rest of the way..

Yup. Gotta hope for a portland win, but I'm not that optimistic for that 3rd or 5th seed. Spurs have one of the toughest remaining schedules, vs GSW, @ OKC, vs Hou, @ Hou, vs PHX, @ NOR. I think I'd rather we end up as a 6th seed vs Memphis, this may be the best option if we can't make it to the 3rd seed. Would rather keep GSW for a Conference Finals if we get there, rather than a Conference Semifinals.

Keep the Warriors for the conf finals. The only way to do that is to stay in 6th.

The Warriors keeping our #2 seed hopes alive...
I am not sure how realistic it is. We would have to pretty much win out and hope for a couple of losses from everybody above us.

Indeed I detailed this scenario earlier in this thread. It's unlikely to happen but there's still a chance that the Spurs manage to move up in the rankings. Obviously any loss from our direct compe ion is welcome.

Situation today for Spurs to clinch #2 seed:
    - SA needs to win 8 games
    - Memphis needs to (a) lose 2 games, including one against New Orleans or (b) lose 3 games.

    - Clippers need to (a) lose 1 game or (b) Spurs win their division

Situation for #3 seed is still a bit too complicated to analyze clearly as there are 5 teams still potentially fighting for it.

The schedule gives just enough of a ray of light to maybe take a swing at winning the division, particularly given that Memphis still has games at the Clippers (on the second night of a back-to-back, following a game at Utah) and the Warriors, along with a home back-to-back with OKC and WAS. Houston's schedule is not as difficult as Memphis's, but the Spurs have their fates relative to Houston squarely in their own hands at this point.

Interestingly, the fate of the Spurs, Grizzlies, and Rockets may be directly tied to how the race for the 8 seed plays out, given that SA, MEM, and HOU all have games remaining against both OKC and NO. Memphis gets both at home, Houston goes to OKC and hosts NO, and SA goes to OKC and NO. (i get that it may not be much of a race with OKC up 2 in the loss column, but NO does have that tiebreaker).

I still think that how the Spurs play out the last week of the season will depend on whether they've been able to close the gap by next Wednesday, when they play Houston at home; that would seem to depend significantly on how the Spurs fare in their games vs. GST and at OKC on Sunday and Tuesday. If they've fallen 3 back by next Wednesday, I think they call off the dogs and rest guys for the last week -- particularly Tim. If Houston and/or Memphis trip even once over the next 7 days and the Spurs continue to roll, I think Pop will actually go for the division.

There are clearly some key games in this stretch: Memphis vs NO next Wed and the 2 games against Houston (and of course all the Spurs games before that, if we start losing winnable games it's all over anyway). So I agree next Wed is the key date to watch and will decide whether Pop goes for it or rests the starters.

It would be amazing if we could get the 2nd or 3rd seed, i didn't even think of it as realistic until last night for some reason. After everything that's gone on this season, getting the 2nd seed would be a huge you to the rest of the conference

Ok, after the Blazers - Slippers game tonight, are we in 5th regardless of the outcome?

No. Portland, as a division winner, can't fall below the 4th seed.

    Well, whatever.
The Sterns made it so if 5th has a better record, 5th gets HCA right?

3rd tiebreaker is better coach, so yes the Spurs win that one.

Pretty sure it's conference record...so no, they have the tie breaker.

Nope. We're 4 conference games behind them with 7 overall games to play. If they lost that many conference games, we wouldn't need a tiebreaker. If we're tied, we're toast.
