There will be plenty of rumors surrounding Leonard's impending free agency but it's extremely unlikely he actually leaves San Antonio this offseason.

    By Jesus Gomez  @JejeGomez_PtR on Apr 2, 2015, 7:00p

A Rumor surfaced this past Sunday about the Boston Celtics going after Kawhi Leonard in free agency. It was just a comment by a reporter noting coach Brad Stevens likes Leonard and the Celtics, like many other teams, would like to sign him, given the chance. Because Kawhi is at this point a star, rumors like that one will continue to appear and will only get more common as the season comes to an end.

The reality is, no matter what you read, the chances of Leonard leaving the Spurs are almost nonexistent. So whenever you come across anything regarding Leonard's free agency, remember these three things:

There's still a good chance he can leave. My sources have told me he's very unhappy with Pop and that fat French Porker for holding him back offensively, and he may be willing to give up $20+ million just so he can be given his due respect somewhere else. Don't be surprised if he forces his way in somewhere else a la Kobe in Colorado 2003...

Covers much of the same ground that has been discussed here in numerous threads for nearly a year. Kawhi will be a Spur next season.

If anyone posts on PTR, please let the writer know that Kawhi can no longer sign an extension. The window for an extension of his rookie contract permanently closed on October 31st. He will become a free agent on July 1st and his next deal will be a new contract.

Man every other team in the league would have ruined Kawhi's development. Glad he is a spur.

So if Green get's Manu like money let's say 8 mill per season and Manu gets Green kind of Money something int he ball park of 4 per season we still wouldn't be able to sign both Timmy and Kawhi? some comments on the article derailed me

They'll be able to sign all four if that's what they choose to do. The consequence of that could be the elimination of cap space to sign a free agent from another team to a contract richer than the MLE.

Spurs haven't built the team on 'star' free agents for a number of reasons. So I discount any significant free agent signing as a valid consideration.

As do I, which is why I was one of the minority that advocated giving Kawhi a max extension last summer rather than preserving the possibility of significant cap space in 2015.

I guess it depends on perspective. A lot of people call new contracts by players who stay with their current teams 'extensions', because they technically aren't letting their current contracts expire. I'd have to research it a bit, but I do think that contracts go from October to October, so any type of reupping before then is actually just extending the old deal.

Not a big deal, but I'm fairly certain that contracts end on June 30th. Let me know if you find anything to the contrary, but I'm pretty sure that Kawhi's next deal will be a new contract.

Related to that is the interesting fact Tony will serve 17 years as a Spur on his original contract plus several subsequent extensions.

Yeah, I wish Deeks updated his site still. That was always fun to read.

Yeah, he was dedicated to the arcane details of the CBA and maintained the most reliable information related to current contracts.

Leonard already got a Finals MVP at a young age, so I don't see how the Spurs system is "holding him back." He has the one award on his resume that a lot if HOF'ers would kill for.

Spurs are letting him flourish. Defense first. Then work on the offense. Most teams woulda shoved the offense down his throat and he would have been mediocre at best without his counters and steals.

The Spurs will give Kawhi the max. Book it.
