Spurs don't have that third star though. Spurs clearly have more talent overall. But you can't use the free agency fail, the Dwight injury, Beverly injured, Etc as reasons not to improve other things. It's almost like when Dwight went down they settled on winning the mvp race.
Historically they have and arguably still do with Parker, Duncan, and Leonard. They do have a lot of mid tier players that are good too. I think you try and get as good a talent as you can get. When Howard went down, they went on a run that got them the 2 seed spot until they lost it recently trying to work Howard back into the line up. Harden was in the MVP race precisely bc they were winning and Harden was dominating.

The idea of an advanced stats guy getting Josh Smith is a confusing one... the advanced stats on him in Detroit showed he was one of the worst shooters in the NBA, and the eye test/reputation test said he was bad for team chemistry... I'm sure Morey was thinking they could use his defense while reeling in his bad shot attempts, but no other coach or GM has been able to do that in ten years so it was obviously a risk...

And Brewer. Brewer and Smith are two of the worst high volume 3-point shooters in NBA history. Having two such players in the rotation of a team with an offense that features the 3 point shot doesn't pass the common sense test, imo.

He has also stuck with an anti-analytics coach, too..

Morey is the "analytics guy", but he doesn't really practice what he preaches..

He's had the job since 2007 and the team has won just one playoff series in that time. Pretty slim returns by most any reasonable accounting.

The Red Sox were into Sabermetrics, Morey used to work for the Celtics and went to MIT, ergo something.

It's also a case of keeping your stars happy. Josh and Dwight are boyz.
