Yes. Look up the rules on restricted free agency.

2-year max contract incoming for Kawhi from another team.
When a restricted free agent wants to sign with another team, the player and team sign an offer sheet, the principal terms of which the original team is given three days to match.4 The offer sheet must be for at least two seasons (not including option years). If the player's prior team also submitted a maximum qualifying offer, then the offer sheet must be for at least three seasons (not including option years).
Ok, thanks for clearing that up, my bad.
There are a lot of players to be had in free agency this year, I just don't see a team locking up cap space for 72 hours on Kawhi, knowing full well the Spurs will match (and wait until the end to tie up other team's cap space). How many teams have max space anyway that won't be in the UFA max sweepstakes? Philly is the only one and Brent Brown would never let Hinke rush Pop / they'll use their cap space to buy picks from teams.
It's not like it's a bidding system. Leonard has to want to sign an offer sheet. He'll have no reason to, since the Spurs will give him any deal he wants, including being able to offer the most money. The chances of him even visiting another team are remote. Only reason this isn't signed at midnight on July 10 is if some other FA has already agreed and they need to time the signings.
Lakers have cap space for 1 Max contract next season
They'll probably spend it on Rondo.
Nope. Mitch already stated openly that they will be looking elsewhere and keeping options open. Rondo might come here on way less money considering how bad he is playing in Dallas
We'll see in July. Gotta love Lakerfan still trusting Mitch after last two summers.
Yep. Quite frankly, if Kawhi signs an offer sheet, he doesn't want to be here. It sure won't be about the money or any terms of the deal.
he has been in charge since 2001 and during that time we have been to the finals 6 times... why shouldn't we trust him
although your specific scenario can't happen, he could do a short term contract with the spurs. That would also screw the spurs.
still offer him MAX?
Unquestionably.
He averaged 20.3 ppg in 15 FGA with 7.4 reb 42% 3P in 7 games series.
The best Spurs scorer, second rebounder...It sounds like max.
Woj said they were and he's been pretty spot on. If by some chance they don't then I can see Leonard signing an offer sheet from a team who will.
hopefully the lakers throw max at him early on and first over Aldridge. that way when the spurs lock Leonard up we still have Gasol, Aldridge, Rondo, Love and slight chance Lebron on the table
Yes, I think Mitch is amused when Spur fans complain about Tony's extension. That's nothing compared to the Kobe-sized extensions the Lakers give to a player that hasn't finished two straight seasons.
unfortunately leonard will be offered and accept the SA max sheet
