I never really listened to them much but I've liked a few of the songs I have heard. I checked out one or two of their CD's on Rhapsody some years ago and I was thinking that the music seemed current and better than much of what was being played on the radio. So much so that I was surprised they weren't more popular in the mainstream.
Did they significantly cost themselves financially with that name choice?

My lasting impression is 3 songs and sounds like 3 different artist. Cult band. The name might have helped them as I remember the name more so than any of their song les. Ironically a song led "Butthole Surfers" is how the band changed their name

Their name actually helped them out in the early 90's. Maybe cashed in on it some. It was a time when you could start saying "butthole" on radio and TV and get away with it. No big deal today. They were never destined to be a huge band anyway. I listened to them mostly in the mid to late 80's but their live shows attracted too many dumbass skinheads. The forum Nazi wannabee's would love it. Still laugh my ass off at the song Moving to Florida.

I had one of their early albums, Pee Pee the Sailor, and never could figure out which speed it was supposed to be played on. Crazy !
