I figure a lot of people weren't raised on music with a lot of depth and backstory. My family would always have good music playing, they were into Queen and The Police in particular and that was passed onto me. I would read about the bands in my youth, they had very interesting backstories. I found the current bands at the time didn't seem so interesting, good music, but just not interesting people for the most part. You really appreciate the music you listen to after you know its roots and a little about the people who created it.
I quickly became interested in musicians and singers from the first half of the 1900s, especially Sinatra, Basie and Horne. I'd always do school reports on notable music figures from the time when I was given the chance and read whatever music books I came across in the library. I temporarily lost an interest during my college years, but it all came back like a boomerang on the backside of my head when I listened to this on the background of some youtube video.
You are on a whole other level than what we usually see "here". You understand music. So many simply don't get it.
As much as I love music unless I can actually get deep into it I don't listen, which is a bit strange. I don't just have it on in the background as noise. I'm either driving alone or have the candles burning the incense glowing with me deeply into it. Yep, in a trance, just like a drug.
Sinatra, Billie Holliday, Count Basic, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Satchmo, Jellyroll Morton, a very important part of it all. Not a month goes by I don't chill with that sound. Love it!

A large part of it is that by listening to the music, you're seeing through their eyes for a moment. Truly good music had some kind of inspiration, I believe, like the struggle of African-Americans the few decades before the civil rights movement. Listening to songs of a musicians career in chronological order can buy you a ticket to their emotional roller coaster, good times to bad times.
Without all that, it's hard to listen to a song more than once.

A great and popular example
You have got it nailed down Mitch, you get it!
When I listen to them old blues from the 20's, and some old cat is singing about hard times, he is living those hard times and you feel it. This isn't some cute boy band worrying about sales, this is the real deal and you know it. When Robert Johnson sings about not wanting the darkness to catch him there he means it. Blacks better be indoors in 1936.
Give me one example of what you consider to be a great listen and then I'll show you what a real great listen sounds like, ok shorty?
You know Avante... you really shouldnt call me shorty and little man... and like that. I already told you what would happen if you and I walked towards each other. I dont evevn need to reach into greatness to shame your lack of taste. I'll do you even one better. Tonight I'll make a thread... Avante vs Luva. I'll set the theme for you to show us how a romantic night would go down. If you can set a better mood than Luva... then I'll never question you on your music taste again. Do you accept my challenge?

Sam Cooke
Then there's...
Blues of that era had depth, you couldn't help but feel the emotion when the songs were written. It'll chirp me up as you'll often find in blues that when you have it bad, just take a look at how bad others had it.
How do you like Gene McDaniels? Very unique song, sometimes you need a few listens to really feel it. Even then, he really brings out the calm groove feeling music had during the era.

Do this shorty, show me some depth ok? I'm betting you have none.
You just lost your job, your old bulldog just died and your woman left ya a note on frig...

Ok small timer... put on those acoustic head phones and relax... I'm DJ'ing tonight.
This cut by Kelly is near and dear to me. I used to date this sweet little Dominican for about year until I got a call from her mother telling me she was married. Her husband was stationed in Japan and came home to surprise her but she was out with me that night. This cat plotted taking my life. So he did all his homework... so much so that he discovered that we knew some of the same people in the streets. They pumped his brakes, if you know what I mean... gave him my number and told him to contact me. Instead... he had her mother contact me. Long story short... I met up with the guy... had a drink, and gave him his wife back. He told me he listened to this song every time he couldn't get in contact with her. They're still married with 3 kids. I like to think I added a little therapy to their suffering relationship.
This next cut is from one of my favorite sports movies, Love & Basketball.
There ain't a man on this planet that can't relate to this song. This cat is a legend!
Teddy P is my "go to" guy when she ain't acting right.
Yeah... I got your attention yet old timer?
Give it up Avante... what you know about my peoples music, huh? I should charge you admission for this.
This all-time classic was used in the movie Sugar Hill. It comes in right on time after the father overdosed on bad heroin given to him by his own son. Classic!!!
This one ranks up there at the top for me. Do you know what inspired such a timeless classic? His first wife was divorcing him and he couldn't keep up with alimony payments so she sued him for the rights to his next album, which was "Here My Dear." He dedicated the album to her, hence, the le of the album. The album flopped due to them not promoting it... she sold her rights and the album became an instant classic upon his death. R.I.P Marvin.
I dedicate this one to you, Avante.
Marvin Gaye is quoted as saying David Ruffin had the best voice he'd ever heard... you could feel his pain. Kanye West ripped this track, and mixed it to a rap song called" Never Change." Jay-Z heard it and stole the track for himself. One of his best rap songs. A lot of young cats don't know who birth'd hip-hop... it all started right here.
And once you're done sulking over her leaving your sorry ass... you listen to this and get right back at it, son.

Dude, I;ve posted most that stuff (artist) already, where you been?
Yep, great stuff there, I totally agree that's why I posted it. Now add some Solomon Burke, Curtis Mayfield, Etta James, Wilson Pickett, Lou Rawls. I thought you've been paying attention?
BUT...can you do...
prewar blues
Chicago blues 50's
Western swing
Rockabilly
Country
Reggae
British rock
Oldies
Alternative
American rock
Folk
Bluegrass

I once heard him over at a friends. We were shooting pool and he came on (compilation) I had to..."who is that?" But, that was my only listen, which sucks.

Well?
Dude... I'm not one of your resident leg humpers. I'm too self-obsessed to follow all your posts. In case you haven't noticed I have a pretty large fan base of losers following me around. With the exception of maybe Bluegrass... everything you just listed is rooted in Jazz and Blues... especially British and American Rock. I have all those names you just mentioned... I just gave you a taste of what I I'm ing with. When Napster was popular in the late 90's, early 2000's I downloaded everything I could imagine. In fact... I never listen to the radio. I research artists and find out who inspired them to write their music. You find out real quick that most music is rehashed from previous musicians. The same can be said for novels and movie scripts. I'm more into movie soundtracks these days.

Buddy, giver it up guy, you look silly, ok? I own over 6000 records.CD's.tapes. I have everything from African tribal music/convict working on a chain gang to Iggy Pop and the Stooges and I don't care for punk.

He's pretty good, I feel like he went unappreciated during his time.

Ok? I gave you something to ease the pain... now you rambling about some other , and what you already posted, and what I'm to assume you're into. Latimore and Percy are B class artists... not surprised you'd prefer to listen to that. I'm top shelf, son... from my women, to my food, to my music, to my drink, to the baby wipes that I wipe my black ass with. You need to catch up, son.

Come on old timer. That he/she was a dime a dozen artists. Try again, but then again... just stop. You're exposing yourself. I can one up anything you post. You can keep your B and C class music and I'll keep listening to my A class music. No offense, son... its just those recessive genes won't let you one up me. You should have learned that by reading all those Elijah Muhammad books you claim to have...

Example
I've already done that, remember? Don't go getting old on me. I played you something a few weeks back and you said you liked it. And why no rap? Rap is to Mowtown music what Rock is to the Blues. Its all connected, son. I thought you knew that.

I had a feeling you weren't getting it. You're not.
Pay attention little guy....
Who doesn't know about all those "NAME" artist, well? Who isn't into Nina Simone? Ever heard her ..Nina Simone The Blues?
Dude, get off ...THE TOP 40...ok? Take me somewhere we haven't all been, ok? Al Green, Otis Redding, Nina Simone are all well known artists, ok? Take me somewhere else, can you do it? No you can't because you lack depth as I mentioned.
So far you haven't shown me , just a bunch of famous artists we all know about, wow, how boring is that?

I want to actually listen to your videos, I can only handle rap for so long before it all sounds the same.
