8MM. It didn't scare me, but it creeped me out.

Let me make it clear, The Exorcist wasn't scary, it was all about how a young girl Linda Blair could transform herself into that creature. And why anyone would allow her to. That left me a bit rattled.
I love horror movies. Good. Bad. In between. Don't care - love them. I've never been truly scared but I am entertained. I think there are so many different types you have to have multiple categories.
An underrated film IMO because of the creepiness factor is: When a stranger calls / calls back
Supernatural horror is entertaining but the movies that were always scarier to me were the ones that just had a psychopath in it like Cape Fear (Scorcese's) & Silence of the Lambs; just simple, realistic terror in those flicks. De Niro's acting in the boat scene of Cape Fear was great.
I remember taking my wife to see "The Blair Witch Project".
Just an awful movie....one of the worst horror movies I've ever seen. Not scary at all....no plot...and you never even see the "ghost/demon". My wife thought it was awesome however. She was terrified for a week.
Different people just have different opinions about what is scary and what is not....
I loved Blair Witch. Agree with Darth though - things like SOL or TX Chainsaw are great because it's not supernatural. I love the Supernatural films too, but there are so many categories.
i'm the opposite, the supernatural stuff always bothers me far more. seeing a psychopath with issues doesn't scare me the same way. Cape Fear is such a great flick though, saw it in theaters when I was probably way too young and still love that one. looks and sounds great on BluRay.
Films I remember messing with my head/sleep as a kid would be the Exorcist. big fan of Friedkin but I don't revisit the Exorcist. part 3 is very good/scary as well.
the first Nightmare on Elm Street scared me the most growing up, just the atmosphere (music and visuals) really got to me. still does. the sequels lost that edge of the first one.
the first Evil Dead is surprisingly disturbing as well, since the sequels went more crazy in a good way.
Alien
The Strangers. Only movie that I lost sleep over. Watched all the supernatural and ll that mess but none ever scared me. Something about the Strangers that gives me the chills when I watch it.
Good call. I don't know if the movie is scary, but the ending is gloomy, pessimistic and truly disturbing. Unforgettable.
I don't really like horror movies, for the most part, but I am actually in search of some good ones.
As for my favorites, Alien and The Shining are at the top of list. Those two are just great movies that happen to be scary. The Thing also fits into that category. Other than those movies, I really don't go back and rewatch horror movies.
^ The Thing is another absolutely fantastic "scary" movie. More of a thriller.

The scene where he's testing their blood with the hot needle? Un ingforgettable. Had my ass on the edge of my seat. Was the very first movie I got on Blu-Ray.

Fire in the Sky creeped me out also. I still think about that one if I'm driving down a dark country road late at night. Or Communion.
Yep. It's the masks. And it's some of the camera angles. Absolutely diabolical. Christ, I won't watch again. No way.
I think it's indicative of having some imagination left.
We can't all be center-focused on the Caper of the Missing Foreskin.
Yep, that is the word(s) to describe this film. The way it gets away from him at the end even when he's so ed from the start. Flying over all that land and water.
And so, when (she) dances naked in the next room over he's genuinely tempted as any MAN would be. He doesn't know she's naked, but, he senses it, fantasizes it and triumphs over this temptation...the truest measure of man. And, he's a good man, a fine man so when he comes across the prepubescent girls dancing naked he's genuinely outraged and doesn't look for pleasure sake. Me? I'd a sidled over to the window while pretending to talk to Lee.
The original NOTLD is first movie I remember being truly scared watching. I was probably 6 years old. The remake came out a few years later and that one scared the crap out of me too. lol
