You need good role players, but you don't need specific players that play a role. In other words, the Spurs would survive the loss of Green. He's not indispensable the way Kawhi is.

DG should be more involved in the offense. If a guy like Korver can make an impact with the Hawks with his shooting, DG should be able to as well. He's too good defensively not to have him out there.

Spurs likely have to overpay him to remain a contender, and they know it. He knows it too.

Losing Danny if operating below the cap would free up his cap hold and might make another deal required to create max space unnecessary. While the Spurs might be able to find a comparable player at the money he'll command (possibly $10+mm), it's going to be next to impossible to replace him for the amount of his cap hold ($7.65mm) which is the real bogey here.

Yes, unless the Spurs sign and trade him, losing him opens up a gaping hole that cant be realistically filled in free agency,

Hopefully he does the Spur thing and takes less than his market value to continue being a Spur, and allow the FO to use that money to better the team. Hopefully..

It's rare that role players take less than they're worth. They don't have the big opportunities that stars get. This is likely Danny's last shot at a big payday. He'll take whoever offers him the most money, tbh.

If someone is willing to overpay for him we'll probably lose him. Spurs would be wise to use Danny in a S&T if his price gets too high.

You're looking at the decision in a vacuum, which is the wrong way to view it. It's all about the opportunity cost of letting Danny walk. If you use the freed up cap space to sign a "max" player and replace Danny in the lineup with a min FA or rookie, then you take the combined contribution of those two against just keeping Danny. I guarantee if they let Danny walk and sign Aldridge, the Aldridge + FA/rookie will generate more net wins than Danny himself.

Danny Green will make his big payday somewhere else. Unless, he magically learns how to put the ball on the floor, he will eventually become one of those highly paid player on the pine who cashed in from success in a system. I speculate that he will find his way back to SA in about 4 years at a more reasonable price.

Maybe he is done in 4 more years so nobody will give 2 shiets for Danny.

Danny would not be playing in the NBA if it wasn't for Pop giving him so many chances to make it. But like many said he will leave for the money, as I don't see Danny as a loyal guy. Lionel Richie will leave and will pretty much suck like most guys do who leave the Spurs.

This is Verde's chance to get a gigantic payday. Another team will give him $12 million per year and he will take the money and run.

Spurs can pay DG whatever. It really doesn't matter. They likely will unless losing him is the only way to get a guy they want after all other efforts or unless they truly feel they can replace him.

Keep Draymond and....sign Danny? You don't have enough money to pay them even if you trade Lee and his massive contract .

No, I'm saying it's likely Danny or someone else that has to be moved out to make space for Aldridge.

    - Scenario 1: Lose Danny and have max space. Fill Danny's hole with Aldridge. I guess you could parlay Splitter or Diaw into a replacement guard too given logjam of bigs assuming Duncan stays.

    - Scenario 2: Keep Danny and move one of the other guys even if #1 pick has to be attached to it. I much prefer this outcome, as guard will be a major liability if trying to replace Danny with a league minimum guy. Then again, if Duncan hangs it up it's a much different conversation as all the sudden Splitter and Diaw are both essential (particularly Diaw's playmaking / Splitter's defense).

Also, if they do keep Danny and Aldridge doesn't sign, what you really have to look at is Danny + spend remainder of cap space on a tier 2 FA ... or Aldridge + min guy.

Giving a spot up shooter 10M that can't dribble, can't finish in the paint and shoots airbals 3 feet away from the basket. Good luck building a championship team with 10M or more going to Danny.
