That's ridiculous, everything would have to go absolutely right for a full rebuild to get you to le contender status that quickly. You'd have to have a top 5 player ready to leave his team, your draft picks better pan out, you better find a good coach. You're making it sound like it's easy to build a le team. I know West loved him, but that was still a very lucky break having Kobe Bryant turn out to be a first ball hall of famer (remember how much West loved Glen Rice too?). And you got Shaq in an era without maximum salaries and without teams having restricted free agency on their own draft picks. Nowadays the Lakers will only be able to pay stars less than their home teams with Bird Rights. Plus Shaq was pissed at the Magic. You're really underestimating how hard it is to build a le team now. Even if your draft picks pan out to their potential, they'll just be entering their primes in 3-4 years. You're not drafting Tim Duncan with 4 years of college experience and ready to dominate from the beginning. The mid 2000s rebuild strategy doesn't work without a prime Kobe Bryant.

I just think 4 years contender, 6 years le is a lot to ask out of a full rebuild. Look how long it took Chicago after drafting Michael Jordan. And not 19 year old Michael Jordan, but 22 year old NBA ready Micheal Jordan. This was a team that was outstanding in the draft too, landing Oakley, Pippen, and Horace Grant within 3 years of picking Jordan. And they weren't a contender until 1989-90, their sixth season after picking Jordan. No le until the 7th.
If I'm the Lakers I try to sign one max player like Aldridge, Love, Draymond Green, Leonard this season, one decent midrange starter like Danny Green or Demare Carroll, and then try to pry Durant in 2016 or Davis or Westbrook in 2017 if they don't sign extensions in 2016. I know how much you hate throwing max contracts at non top-5 players, but those will be pretty decent contracts when the new TV deal comes in 2016 and drives revenues and the cap through the roof. Durant or Davis are pretty much their only reasonable chance to be legit le contenders by 2017-18, maybe Westbrook. But you will need a decent core to lure them to take less money. They're not intentionally tanking next year with Philly taking their pick. They need to start working to building a winning culture there again.
