Wade, Heat have significant difference in contract negotiations; Wade open to leaving Heat if it doesn't get resolved

The Heat and Dwyane Wade have been discussing potential resolutions of his contract situation and there’s a significant difference in what both parties believe he should be paid for the next three seasons, according to multiple sources.

Wade must decide by late June whether to opt out of a contract that would pay him $16.1 million next season.

The Heat wants to keep him but believes that paying him what he’s seeking would dramatically reduce its flexibility to add additional players during the summers of 2016 and 2017.

Last summer, in order to give the Heat flexibility to augment its roster, Wade opted out of the final two years of a contract that would have paid him $41.6 million. He instead accepted a two-year, $31 million deal, which included a player option for next season at $16.1 million.

If Dragic re-signs and if Hassan Whiteside commands a huge contract from Miami as an unrestricted free agent next summer, the Heat could be paying more than $80 million to four players in 2016-17. Throw in the $5.8 million due Josh McRoberts in 2016-17, and that would leave the Heat with no room under an $89 million cap to address small forward or bolster its bench.

Wade is an 11-time All-Star and eight times has been named to the All-NBA’s first, second or third team. He was not on an All-NBA team this season but received two third-place votes.

He has ranked seventh, 18th and 24th in ESPN’s NBA efficiency ratings over the past threes season. He shot 47 percent last season, lowest since his rookie season but second behind J.J.Re among shooting guards.

Lebron was supposed to be his boy..he ed over Wade....he could have at least told him...Wade is exhibit #1 of why you don’t sacrifice first… He should have gotten his instead of giving up a ton of $ in the hopes that Lebron would come back. Lebron got his. Bosh got his. Dragic is gonna get his. Wade should have gotten his too

Wade shouldn't leave the Heat. He will go down as that franchise's best all-time player if he doesn't, even when LeBron was there people still considered it "Wade's team". He's a folktale hero down there.

Wade's on the downward end of his career. He's no longer a top 20 NBA talent but he will be paid handsomely for his past accolades and for what he means to the franchise. He'll get paid here and nothing will happen.

Or he can sign on another team and get bounced in the first round and sacrifice his legacy a bit. Not like he has a chance to ring again unless he becomes a second or third option on a team needing a position player like him.

He will even if he does leave. He's on his twilight years. He's still capable of putting up good numbers, but his glory days are behind him. The Heat should pay him for his loyalty and for the fact that he took one in the shorts to get them to the promised land. If they don't meet him on it, I'd walk if I was him. He can afford to.

He will never get out of the first round in Miami again. He will be lucky enough to be on another Heat playoff team.

Can't blame Wade for trying to cash in after Lebron cost him a bunch of money, tbh..

I don't blame any for getting money, especially in the NBA..the ultimate winners like Duncan, Lebron, and even Dad Killer do anything to win, that's all they care about, but I don't blame guys like Kobe and Wade for not caring about winning..

The guys that want all the money have a good argument when they look at Dirk and how Cuban/Mavs front office ed him..

Heat would be smart to let him go.. Business is business and he doesn't have much left in the tank. He wants to be paid for his past mostly. He's had a great career there maybe it will forever sour the relationship, but you will be badly overpaying him for the next 4-5 years..
