Foregone conclusion, but still great news.

This ride isn't over yet, fellas. My fears of seeing the silver and black take the court without 21 out there are assuaged for another year at least.

    GOAT.

Glad he will play until 40+. What a legend.
When did Kareem finally tail off? It was his last season, but not sure how old he was. Malone was pretty good for the Lakers in that final year until he got hurt (and hit on Kobe's wife).

Damn are we lucky to be watching Tim Duncan for 19 ing years. Being an All-NBA level player for 19 years, being a bigtime playoff performer the whole time, I mean Duncan's only peer in NBA history when it comes to this is Abdul-Jabbar.

Has little, if anything, to do with this decision, but Tim is 4 playoff game appearances from passing Robert Horry for 2nd all-time; with one more deep run (at least the conference finals if they get a couple of long series), he can pass Fisher (259) for the all-time lead in playoff appearances. Simply playing in a playoff game doesn't say much, but to hold that record as a guy who was pivotal to the success of his team would be a pretty strong testament to who Tim Duncan has been.

He is already, if I am not mistaken, the all time leader in playoff minutes too!

    It's been an amazing ride.

Is there anyone else in the history of basketball that you'd rather have to build your franchise around? I just don't see it. Factoring in playing ability with team-first dedication, avoiding all outside distractions, being a great teammate and amazing longevity, Duncan has to be at the top of the pile.

    I'm hoping for three-year contract

Popovich has indicated in the past that he would walk away once Duncan retired.

Spurs general manager R.C. Buford told ESPN the organization was "not going to rush them [to make a decision]," adding that, "They'll have time to talk amongst themselves, and we'll have time to listen to what they're saying and act accordingly."

Having competed in 1,572 games and 241 contests in the postseason, Duncan was expected to ponder his decision to return for the majority of the summer. Ginobili has said Duncan's decision could impact whether he returns for the upcoming season. Ginobili has also said that he will announce his decision in La Nacion, an Argentine newspaper.

"I continue to be amazed by Tim Duncan," Popovich said in May. "He was our most consistent player in the playoffs, at 39. He needed a little more help. I feel badly he didn't get it."

But AJ never rebounded or played D like Duncan at that age (or any other age).
