Rather, I think it's easy to look back at those things and overrate them. Bowen didn't really slow guys down as much as people remember he did. Most guys hit their average against him, but they "had to work hard for it". That was what people thought good defense was back then. Nowadays, it's very possible to pretty much shut down almost every player (prime Lebron being the exception because he's the best basketball player who's ever lived). The standards are completely different now, and in that light, Bowen just wasn't as impressive as people recall him being. Either Green or Leonard on the team during that span would have made the Spurs a better team.

Holy . I had to interrupt the celebration (welcome aboard, Lamarcus, btw) to say how ing stupid and misinformed you are. This could be the most ignorant take I've ever seen on Spurstalk. NOBODY hit their ing average against Bowen unless they took twice as many shots. People forget that Kobe Bryant was an abnormally efficient scorer when he was a useful role player on a good team. Making Kobe have to put up 25 shots to get 25 points is amazing defense, and it took shots out of other players' hands. "Making them work for it" means turning an egocentric superstar into a chucker, but here's the key: You have to do it without sending the guy to the line, which Bowen was absolutely amazing at, because he defended with his feet. Bowen could cover Chauncey Billups and Steve Nash as well as covering Dirk Nowitzki and Pau Gasol, frustrating them, forcing bad shots, taking them out of their game, and not getting his team into the penalty.

The Spurs would have two banners, not five, hanging in the arena if he hadn't been on the team. There wouldn't have been a Green and Leonard if there hadn't first been a Bowen, who was the prototype of the 3 and D player teams are paying huge money for on the free agent market today.
