Leonard was drafted not having a decent shot. I don't see why LJC at 21 years old can not develop decent form with Chip Engeland coaching him.
You are right about ASVEL not giving LJC any playing time.
Not getting minutes is what will kill him, Asvel doesn't have time to wait for a player to develop a shot either so he won't get a ton of run. The majority of his shooting issues is on the release.. His release point is way too high, he brings the ball way to far above his head.

Leonard was drafted with hitches in his shot that were deemed to be fixable. He also wasn't able to handle the ball. His improvement in both areas has been nothing short of amazing. If LJC is going to improve anywhere, it'll be in San Antonio. Not overseas, not in Austin.
He should force the issue and then work his ass of to be useful for the team. He was injured 2 years ago and it appears there have not been any noticeable improvements in his game (unless he was just tired yesterday).
Game thoughts, Summer league game 2
I don't know if it's an indication of how poor Utah's big team is, but they have some good players on their roster. The Spurs really beat them around until they decided to stop going to the basket and settled for jumpers in the 4th. This was a decent test for them, and we can figure some more things out now that we've seen some info.
I took notes during the game, and I tried to organize them together. I'll include the raw notes on occasion as I feel necessary.
Some non-player related thoughts:
The Jazz broadcast team are possibly the stupidest people I've ever listened to on television. Their color guy doesn't know Andrew Wiggins' name, even though he has a brother on the Jazz SL team. Way to prepare, dude. He also doesn't seem to realize that Antoine Carr came to Utah from the Spurs, since he asked in an incredulous tone of voice why Carr lives in San Antonio. I had to go back and watch the 4th quarter with the sound down.
Quinn Snyder looks like a homeless person someone put a 100 dollar shirt on, or in the movies when the town drunk gets cleaned up to meet his family or to testify in the big case.
The practice of going split-screen while you're interviewing someone during the game just so you can look at their face needs to go away. Better yet, the practice of interviewing someone during the game needs to go away.
Are all Salt Lake City women unattractive, or is it just Jazz fans? Guess the trophy wives don't arrive until the regular season. Yeesh
Game thoughts.
Reffing just as bad in game 2 as in game 1, with the exception that the Spurs didn't get any bad calls of their own to make up for the ones against them this time. I saw two continuations awarded where the dribbler travelled after the foul. I guess that's a thing now. Kyle Anderson was called for the first blocking foul in history where he didn't move his feet. At all. He was standing in a defensive position, the dribbler just mowed over him, and Kyle got called for a block. I had to laugh.
For the Spurs' purposes, LJC is a center and Cady Lalanne is a 4. Lalanne is definitely bigger, but you can tell by the way they deal with contact on defense that they should swap positions and assignments. I thought LJC was the bigger guy, but he just plays like a big, and it shows.
If I were coaching this team, I'd be telling people to block out, to get back on defense. I'd tell dribblers to wait until the pick is set to try to dribble around it, I'd tell them to wait until the post player seals and calls for the ball. I'd tell post players to seal before calling for the ball. I'd also call a ing timeout when my team gets the rebound with 11 seconds to go instead of letting them dribble until there's 4 seconds.
Player thoughts:
Ware, Graham, Scott, Smith, Nastic
You guys can't play in the NBA. Sorry. If the first three were bigger, they'd have a chance. Roscoe Smith is turrible. Nastic is a guy who plays basketball because he was tall and they told him to. Apparently he has a face that basketball refs don't like, because he got whistled for getting forearmed.
Cady Lalanne
Probably not ready for prime time, but better than I expected. He could stick at some point, but he'll need a year in Europe or Austin before he does it. He works hard on defense, he rebounds well, he's got a good at ude, and he's where he needs to be.
LJC
I still really like him. The things he does well are important, and the things he doesn't do well are easily fixed. His hands are very good. Those who say they aren't simply aren't watching. He made a terrible entry pass, resulting in a fast break, which he promptly shut down with an unbelievable block at the basket. (My notes about that play say "holy ")
Dairis Bertans
I probably misspelled his name. I'm tired of looking it up. If he makes the team I'll commit it to memory.
He can play point. Since that's the need for the Spurs, I'd like to see it happen. He and Kyle need to be the backcourt for a game or two. Bertans is a good defender. He's got quick feet and he's smart. His pick and roll defense was very solid. He needs to learn when to pull up when he has a break to the basket, but I'm pretty sure he learned his lesson in this game. He shoots well from three, but I don't think he was the same after getting whacked in the head. The airball on the subsequent free throw should have told somebody that maybe he should have sat the rest of the evening. He missed two or three wide open shots after that that could have made a difference in the game. I don't really blame him for that.
Kyle Anderson
This was a much better performance from KA. After game 1, I wondered if he was an NBA-caliber player at all. He righted the ship in game 2.
He pulled down contested rebounds in this game, where he collected them in game 1. This was a sign of deliberate effort. The rest of his game followed. (Note says "Kyle rebounding like a man")
His handles were really really bad in this game. My notes show he just fumbled away the ball several times before halftime. That's pretty concerning and I'll be watching from here on out.
He defended well, using his feet. He didn't turn his back and flinch away like a little girl running from a bee a single time. He did that twice in game 1.
Going for a steal on a 3-on-1 break that you caused with a bad turnover might not be the best thing in the world.
I thought Kyle was a better pick and roll player as the ball handler. He was really not good tonight.
Kyle passed up a wide open three in rhythm, took one dribble, and clanked a long 2. It was kind of a Belinelli move except that he would have been better off taking the first shot.
Bryce Cotton
Gotta give him props. He hammered the ball loose from a Spur in the first half, leapt out of bounds and saved the ball to a teammate with a behind the back pass while in midair. Play of the game for me.
Thanks. If Bertans can play defense and shoot a 3, he could be worth signing up. He could be a Dellavedova clone.
Thanks for the write up!![]()
Thats right! Now I remember. Bertans was supposed to play the Vegas Summer League with us. However, before that he played the Orlando Summer League for Boston....and he got hurt. Totally forgot about that. Glad to see hes obviously better.

Ugh, 7 minutes I waited for a reporter to ask her thoughts about any of the SL roster instead it was basically one "Talk about having a vagina" question after another.
She talked about her vagina? That might actually make me watch it.
Bertens is not an NBA player due to lack of athleticism and height. LJC is an NBA player because of D. His O will come with more playing time. Remember, he is very young and coming off ACL surgery. If he stays healthy this year I'm guessing we'll see a completely different player next summer. He reminds me of Tristian Thompson.

JJ Barea says o.
Pop needs to teach her how to troll reporters. That's one thing Bud, Brett, and Kerr haven't learned from him, tbh.
I think you have to have won rings as a coach before anyone tolerates that .
Exactly, that is why everyone tolerated when Bill Parcels did it. IMO, he was the best at it.
KA needs to solve his confident issue, in the game it feels like he second guss himself a lot, hesitating before he shot, and also the confident issue leads to him being confuse that is leads to fumbling the ball and turnovers...
He will almost always pass if someone is open or cutting to the basket, even when he is in the middle of a drive. It can be maddening or highlight play depending on what his teammates are doing. It appears as indecision when he surveys the situation. Lack of playing time and rhythm with these guys doesn't help. I hope he improves on that, Pop doesn't like guys holding the ball with indecision anyway.
she looks much thinner
