Yeah, the Rock Star commissioner got humiliated on this one. Ain't no 85 year old Jew this time.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver called the Moratorium Period ‘An Imperfect System’. Surely, we can come up with a system that is better.
How about keeping a moratorium period but adding a league approved 'letter of intent' during this time. If a player changed his mind his decision would have to go before the NBA to be approved. This would eliminate the 'ram rod job' that the Clippers performed at the last hours. If the players reason for changing his mind was deemed legitimate than it would be allowed. A guideline of what is a legitimate reason can also be outlined. To change their mind simply because of an immature approach that could be easily swayed back at the last minute would not be possible.
Even this could have short-comings but it would make a player take a commitment seriously. It's sad how something is necessary to force grown men to be honorable.
I'm totally open to any better suggestions. Please don't just be critical of an idea but suggest one.

I thought about that very same thing but why would players accept that?
The best I could see would be a rule that within 36 hours of a statement regarding intent to sign, the player will not negotiate with other teams. The moratorium against singing would then end for that particular team at the end of the 36 hours for that specific player and team. They would then sign a contract or the team would move on, or sweeten offer.
This gives a weak minded player like dj some room to cool off, adequate time to hammer out terms, and some protections against interference from coaches (can't imagine any rule that prevents player to player contact).
